Not a lens in the classical way, but a pentaprism
The Nikon DE-1 viewfinder for the Nikon F2.
I spent the last year browsing camera stores and the web and often found myself losing my mind over the ridiculous prices people were charging (and obviously paying too) for this little thing.
For those who don't know what I'm talking about:
The Nikon F2 was first sold with an unmetered simple viewfinder, the DE-1.
Shortly after that, they introduced the metered "Photomic" viewfinder, followed by several evolutions of that very viewfinder.
When I bought my F2, I paid 120$ for a camera in pristine condition with a fully functional photomic finder installed.
Because I would like to use the camera with off-camera flash in studio, I'd like to ditch the extra weight of the photomic finder and replace it with the DE-1.
Boy was I up for a surprise.
The DE-1 in battered condition usually sells for as little as 200$ and can go up to 400 bucks for the black Titanium version. (without a camera to use it with, mind you!)
You often find the F2 with DE-1 finder for 300-500 USD on eBay too.
Except for the fact that it looks better and it's less heavy to handle, I can't really see an advantage to the meterless finder, but obviously people are going crazy about that thing.
Last week, I finally got lucky, when some guy sold the finder in great condition (no dents or scratches) at an extremely low price.
I started bidding right away and seem to have given the impression that I was hellbent to purchase it, because there wasn't much resistance from other bidders and I ended up getting my Nikon DE-1 for 115$
On one hand I feel like I made a bargain deal and on the other hand I still feel like I paid way too much for such a "worthless" product.
