p.2 #1 · p.2 #1 · Where are the Pentax 645 lenses?

Thanks, Mawz.

A point of clarification: When you say "using the Pentax adapter", do you mean that only one made by Pentax will work properly?

Also, I have been looking at a 600mm Pentax 67 "Takumar" lens. What does Takumar mean, and will it work like other 67 lenses on the 645D?

This doesn't show SMC, so I guess the glass is not as good, right?

Hehehe, it looks like some novice spray-painted it.

As far as I'm aware, only the Pentax-made adapter has the aperture coupling included.

Pentax 67 lenses were introduced in the late 1960's when Pentax was still branding their lenses as Takumars (back then Pentax was merely the brand for the bodies, the company was Asahi Optical Co.). There are Super-Takumar/6x7, SMC Takumar/67 and SMC Pentax 67 lenses in the line, in order of introduction. Older lenses are generally weaker but that isn't always a given. You'll want SMC or Super-Multi-Coated-Takumar labelled lenses as they have much better coatings than the Super Takumars.

The lens you link to is a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar lens, so it has the more modern coatings but is otherwise one of the early lenses from 1971-73 or so.

Mamiya 7ii system...I had the Pentax 645ii - great camera but these days 35mm full-frame digital is at least as good...So I would switch to the rangefinder Mamiya. Great lenses that have dropped significantly in price.

+1

As long as the op has no plans to go digital later on, this system is absolutely amazing.

Tariq,

I have looked into this a bit and was told that trying to use Hasselblad lenses is problematic because they won't meter properly on the 645D. Is that true?

Also, does this applyl to adapting Pentax 67 lenses? I don't mind giving up AF but I don't want any other problems.

You would want to look further into it but I bet it's only a matter of stop down metering with the Hasselblads vs. normal open aperature metering with the Pentax 67 lenses using the Pentax adapter. In general, the Hasselblad Zeiss lenses should perform better than most of the Pentax 67 lenses, though there are a few outstanding 67 lenses I have read about such as the last version of the 55 F4, 75 F4.5 and the 55-100 zoom. I think the Hasselblad Zeiss lenses are quite the bargain right now for the performance they offer.

Tariq,

I've been thinking about your comments regarding Hasselblad and have found the following:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/800760280-USE/Hasselblad_Super_Telephoto_500mm_f_8.html

This might be just what I need. But I'm a bit put off by the f8 limitation. Does that mean that one cannot isolate a subject to the same degree as an f4, say, with the Canon 5D2? Or does the f8 not correspond directly with the f-stops on such contemporary cameras?

Also, do you see any problem in using this with the 645D aside from needing the adapter and stopping down to meter?

With the larger format surface area, you will inherently get less dof (more isolation of your subject) at the same F-stop and angle of view compared to a smaller format like the 5D2. That is a pretty long lens. What type of subject matter do you plan to shoot? F8 is slow and that lens is somewhat older. According to the MTF data, it does not appear to be really that outstanding.

I will be watching this thread with some interest - I have been strongly considering selling my DSLR equipment and investing in the digital 645 system. The scarcity of lenses is enough to make me a little hesitant for now.

Tariq,

As I expected, you've had some very helpful comments about the f8 lens. I've decided not to go with anything like that.

I do a lot of different photography. I would like a longer lens to use in wildlife (birds at rest) and focused landscape shots (i.e., of distant objects like a portion of a waterfall).

Right now I'm considering a Pentax 67, 600mm f/4:

Here is a pretty good guide for Pentax 67 lenses:
http://www.antiquecameras.net/pentax6x7lenses.html

Looks like Pentax made some really outstanding long lenses for the 67. The ED versions looks to be really nice though even the older ones are rated pretty good.

There are quite a few lenses available now, used and some "new/old stock", but mostly used.

I have been buying, trying out, then selling Pentax 645 gear for about four years now. Currently there are quite a few lenses available compared to before, the difference is that they are selling quickly, although that is slowing down for some lenses.

Which lenses are you looking for?
