Well, having seen what this lens can do in other forums, and having read many reviews, and even tried one on a Canon 5D Mark II, I fell for it and bought one. Today I used it exclusively in my current project setting: a cemetery. Normally I use exclusively my ZF21 and ZF.2 100MP, so returning with some good photos says quite a lot.

In the end, I think that the real calling of this lens (and its 85mm big brother) is portraits, but feel free to post anything taken with these two lenses. I didn't add the 30mm f/1.4 to the title, but feel free to add these photos as well.

My girlfriend doesn't want me to post photos of her, nor of our daughter, in the internet, but I found one from today which is safe I gave my 2 year old daughter a bowl of flour, a bowl of water, another bowl, three spoons of different sizes, and the bathroom floor, to play. This is what she came up with.

(I really need to spend more time figuring out how to sharpen on export. This photo is sharp in reality, but here it looks poor.)

Hmm, you are not the first to say something like this. Charles also couldn't see my photos for a while, although at some point it started working. When I load these various threads on my iPad, many shots don't show up either. I wonder what the problem is? It seems more likely to be a server problem at this point, given the variety of clients, some of whom cannot, and some of whom can see my images (and those of some others). I am no networking expert though, and wouldn't know how to debug it.

Sigma 50 1/.4 was my favorite lens when I had my D700. Great for everything, street, events, portraits.

Hi Carsten,

I liked my Sigmalux a lot in the 5D(2) days. The AF was a catastrophe of course, both copies. But sometimes it worked:

Sometimes not:

Your cemetery images were a surprise, sort of; they represent the kind of images were the Sigma never really excels. At least none of my two copies could make an image critically sharp from corner to corner, or even border to border.

Cheers,

Hmm, weird. My Sigma 50 1.4 is _really_ sharp, pretty much across the frame from 2.8-4 and down to diffraction-limit.

I checked my archive for samples. Deleted. I recall it as I deleted some samples when learning the lens. Brickwall stuff, some buildings. They were not sharp from the left to the right border. (5DMkII and f/8 and be there).

I never used the lens for anything like that again. Instead my trusty old EF50/1.4 came to use.

I was an early adopter of the Sigma. I loved the rendering and really like some of the images I got from it. When in creamy mood nothing beats the Sigmalux at f/2. OTOH I had this AF problem with the lens where it worked OK or bad depending on the shooting distance.
The first lens went back and forth between me and Sigma's nordic agent in Kungsbacka, Sweden. The second lens, well they didn't try to fix it but just offered me my money back. Those were Sigmalux lenses with EF mount.

If a working lens is OK over the whole frame I would like to try it again some day when I get back to FF cameras. (That would be when there is something like a FF Panasonic G1, I wonder who will be first.)

regards,

Jonas

I haven't done any brick walls, but I am happy with the sharpness wide open. It is no ZF100MP or ZF35/2, but it is sharp enough for what I bought it for, and a little more. The AF is slow, but it gets there. I haven't had any misses yet, where the subject wasn't just outpacing the AF. I like it very much. A keeper for sure. I wouldn't mind a little more sharpness stopped down, but I can accept that it can't do that, for that price. I will probably end up with ZF35/2 and ZF50MP anyway, at some point, so this will be covered.

Here is a recent shot of the front door of Notre Dame in Paris. I do not have my usual frame since I sharpened in Photoshop this time, and don't have my workflow in place there. Sigma 50mm f/1.4 wide open. Great lens.

Ahhh, those flares, I love 'em (sorry for the repost)

Edit: Regarding the AF. It works well enough for the few times I actually use it.

No it's not tack sharp, but that's more because of 1/50s shutter rather than focus. Then again I don't trust any lenses AF.

Carsten,

Currently, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 is the lens that is mounted to my Canon 5DmkII most often. I think it's very versatile and mine is plent sharp enough at f/1.4. Just as you've mentioned, I use it mostly for portraits.

I cannot help but comment about the soft contrast and desaturated colors. Could be very useful for portraits and weddings and some contrasty scenes, but they're not exactly universal lenses.

i have tried a lot 50ies lens.
and after i put altogether:
focusing at low light, speed, bokeh, usability, mfd,
i decided that its the best 50 for me.

the ony lens from the bunch i kept is the oly MC 50 1,8 because of its size
and its prize (25€)
