Here's an update RT the Vagabond Mini. PCB seems to have updated the page with actual pictures of the product.

I'm aware of the product page, though the concern is when these will start shipping. It's already december 12th. I wonder if they are testing the quality control and endurance specs as Lithium batteries are pretty sensitive batteries.

re: elinchrom bxri 500, most likely. I'll be using this with the elinchrom d-lite 4's which are somewhat similar in watt output though different in other components that enable the bxri to get a faster flash duration.

I've emailed the Bees to see if it is compatible with my Elinchrom BXRi 500s. We'll see what they say.

Aren't older analog strobes better than digital for use with battery/inverter packs?

Not necessarily. Many of the issues have to deal with multiple voltage strobes.

Short answer: We have Vagabond's built and tested. 2500 batteries were due to be received by air freight early last week. Then we were informed (Tuesday) the logistics company would not ship them because the vendor failed to provide correct MSDS documentation. We've been screaming at the vendor ever since and are trying every trick in the book to get the batteries in ASAP.

Buff why dont you just sell it now with NIMH? Seems like it would work just as well and only be a bit heavier for the same capacity.....and way cheaper too! (especially the charger)

edit:

Or you could just sell me one without a battery.....

Can you give a new guestimate on delivery timeframe, Paul?

"Buff why dont you just sell it now with NIMH? Seems like it would work just as well and only be a bit heavier for the same capacity.....and way cheaper too!"

you should do your research on NIMH batteries before making that statement, especially when it comes to using strobes.

thanks for the update Paul. The vagabond mini will be a highly talked about product in 2011, especially by the strobist community.

It's already a talking point (among the strobist community, probably not among the wedding cake community), and for the same reason as all of Paul's recent products - it doesn't physically exist, or it's busted, or it's in for ANOTHER redesign.

But there's always the awesome customer service.

Yes, this has been the talk of 2010, but let's see what the talk of 2011 turns out to be...

What has the talk about the AB's oe WL's been for years now? Does anyone even remember if there were teething problems with them to begin with? If so, I've never read about it even once. All you read on forums, or hear about, is their reliability, price, and the truely awesome CS that comes with them.

You state "all" of the recent PCB products are non-existent or "busted".

The Cyber Commander product is recent and it exists. It also went through issues in getting to market on time. But it is out there now and it works.

I have one and I think it works great.

There is also the High-Output Beauty Dish (and grids), 8.5-inch High Output Reflector (and grids), 11-inch Long Throw Reflector (and grids), 22" Retro Laser Reflector, and probably other products that have been recently introduced.

But please, continue your hyperbole anyway

Uhhh last time I checked the inverter they are using doesnt draw all that much current, any high drain NIMH should do the job fine. How do you think they use NIMH batteries in something like an electric RC car? That draws a hell of a lot more power than my X1600....

Just an update from Paul on the Vagabond Mini. Most of you probably already knew about this or knew it was coming...

Dear Vagabond Mini™ Lithium Customers,

We have done everything possible to meet our anticipated shipping schedule for the Vagabond Mini™ Lithium systems, but we have unfortunately encountered a delay at the very last minute that is beyond our control. We have all of the inverters and casing components in house and were awaiting arrival of the lithium batteries when we learned that they were being held for international inspection. They are not expected to clear customs until mid-January.

At our expense, we are upgrading to the fastest possible shipping option to get the batteries here quickly once the inspections are complete. We will begin assembling systems as soon as the batteries arrive, perform our final tests and quality control checks, and be prepared to ship orders as quickly as we can. We anticipate shipment to begin in late January. At that time, we will be sending you an e-mail to let you know that your order is ready and that your credit card will be charged.

We apologize for this unexpected delay and will continue to do everything within our power to get your system to you quickly. If you have any questions, please contact our Customer Service team Toll Free at 1-800-443-5542. This week, we're here Tuesday (Dec. 28) through Thursday (Dec. 30), from 9:00am to 5:00pm, CST. We'll be back for our regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm, CST) on January 3, 2011.

Thank you,
The Customer Service Team

What is sometimes called irresponsible product release scheduling on our part is not accurate. We have never given a firm shipping schedule . . . only anticipated schedules. Define "anticipated" In the latest snafu, we were promised a certain date for the battery shipment, which indeed was met by the vendor.

Problem was the vendor documentation was not sufficient for the logistics company, who refused to ship based on that insufficiency. The vendor insisted they had a "secret method" of getting around this issue. In the interest of safety and compliance we refused to allow them to work around the laws and regulations and they prepare 100% compliant documentation.

We did receive a 10 piece sample shipment via Fedex Express late last week. We have a 500 piece Fedex shipment due Tuesday, but honestly don't know if it will get through or not, The regulations are so vague nobody can figure them out. If indeed the 500 piece shipment makes it to us, we will begin shipping much earlier than the recent "late January" stated anticipation. We purposely added time to the schedule we really anticipate because experience tells us that not doing this ends up with accusations of ineptness and misleading our customers on this and other forums if the expectations fail in any way.

All we can do is to do the best we can. Remember . . . Gitmo was ordered closed in 2010 and the unemployment was promised not to exceed 8% if all that stimulus money was borrowed, printed and spent? And those were the promises of "the best Harvard educated minds in America"

As for the battery company, this is not a fly by night operation, rather a large and highly competent manufacturer. The whole issue has nothing to do with the actual safety of the battery . . . which is extremely high.

Paul, Sorry, but, those two comments seem mutually exclusive. A company that suggests they have a "secret method" for getting around regulations does NOT seem like a "large and highly competent manufacturer". The latter would ALREADY have the necessary compliant documentation in place before they ever tried to ship.

Don't buy anything from PCB if you have something to complain about. Get your product from somewhere else. Problem solved and b!tch!n stopped.

This is true, but you must admit, it would be helpful if they paused about 6 months from when they first create buzz on a product. Hype is good, but there is a limit.
