There's a guy called The Lens Doctor on a well-known auction website selling his own design of FD to EOS adapters with a chip and a lens made of Hoya glass.

Has anyone tried one yet?

I'm not sure the word Hoya inspires me to believe it will be worth getting.

I used to drive thru Hoya, Japan enroute to work. The glass factory is hugh. Looks like somehow some of it actually survived the WW11 bombings by Gen. LeMays aircraft.

This is weird. It seems to have disappeared from his store on that well-known auction website. It only lists refurbished lens.

I did find a reference to it on a site called twenga, after Googling "the lens doctor fd adapter". I clicked on the link and it briefly showed the item on a page on the well-known website, but then the page changed.

Perhaps he's sold out already.

I emailed him -- he said he was waiting for new stock. That's now in, so I ordered one.

Hoya is the world's largest maker of optical glass PERIOD! They provide glass to virtually all major camera and lens manufacturers INCLUDING LEICA.They also own Pentax.

Size doesn't matter much. Quality does. Hoya/Kenko make some really quality optics! They also make some of the worst ever! They have their fingers in many pies. From plastic lenses no one would want to go near to very decent lenses only a few cuts below the best in the world. The pies get mixed and the company has a difficult time with consumer recognition of the various quality levels. They might also have a difficult time recognizing such distinctions internally if one examines they're history. :P

That the lens element is made by Hoya or that Hoya is big means almost absolutely nothing.

There are a few manufactures that have made these in the past and even Canon themselves. I're read posted that the canon one was the only one that was "good" but I have no first hand information. The canon one sure is expensive - that's for sure! (although every once in a while I see one attached to a lens being sold together at almost no additional price over the lens's value).

I'm just wondering on what use it may have attaching this adapter to a fast lens with f=1.8 or faster. The lens element doesn't appear to be wide enough to transmit a light equivalent of an f=1.8 or faster lens.
Despite that, the guy never mentions anything about a multiplication factor. The original Canon adapter used to enlengthen the focal length by some amount.

This adapter will work as a tele converter too.
I suppose that it has a factor about 1.3. But not mention this, sounds to not good.

I think the lens diameter of this adapter is still not good for fast lenses - I suppose that even fast long lenses will have shading full open - at least when one use FD extension tubes.

The original Canon Lens Mount Converter FD-EOS C54-2131 has 4 lenses in 3 groups - and I suppose the Lens Docter Adapter has one lens as the other adapters have.

This new adapter is a compromise between quality, price and usability for all FD lenses, not only the longer ones like the original Canon FD EF adapter.
I think a (probably reversible) mount conversion is still much better - but this adapter could be good enough for some not want to convert the lens (cost/effort/feasability)

Andrew, did you ever receive the adapter? How's the quality and optics?

I just started a new thread on these because I hadn't seen this one. From what I've found, Eddie Houston - aka The Lens Doctor, was a technical manager for Canon UK back during the days of the FD mount.
Here's my thread -

Hoya owns Tokina and Kenko. they make the glass in probably 40-50% of all camera lenses. Nikon is about the only Japanese exception since they have their own glass factory. between Ohara and Hoya, they cover about 80% of all the glass for optical lens market, which includes camera lenses.

Thanks for the info Herb.

I found this guys website -
http://www.thelensdoctor.co.uk/page14.html

Apparently his adapters utilize Hoya UD class and are cut to his specification's by an ophthalmologist.

He also "de-clicks" the aperture systems on lenses, what he calls "Fluid Variable Aperture" for use in DSLR video use. Supposedly, the BBC have commissioned him to install the aperture system on all their stills lenses.

More info on that -
