I have a question about the FD mount 50mm f/1.4. There are S.S.C and version without S.S.C on them. What does this mean? Are the lenses the same or is one newer/improvement over the other.

Thanks.

Well, supposedly SSC means "super spectra coating".

Maybe these will help:

I was using that lens on my RP, between 1.6 & 1.8, and then picked up the FL 55 1.2. Now, the 50 1.4 collects dust.

There was the FD 1.4/50 S.S.C. with Canon's traditional flange bayonet with a silvery ring, sometimes referred to as "chrome ring". Later this series was replaced by the "new FD" series which did not have the silvery flange. In this series the lens was called FD 1.4/50. I always thought that it was the same lens design, and the same multilayer coating.

If my assessment is correct, then the lenses are pretty much the same, but they mount a little bit differently. In case of the S.S.C, you rotate the flange, in case of the other you rotate the whole lens, as is common with almost all exchangable lenses nowadays.

That's the one I have, the 'chrome nose' version. Not really a bad lens.
