I tried to photograph one of these before, but just got shinny black. The head must be very tiny, as I could not see it. Does anyone know? I was scared to mess with him to much.

Judging by the red violin that's a Black Widow but it probably ain't a "him" but a "her' as they're known to eat their mates after copulation. Shiver!! Nice captures.

Could be Northern Black Widow (Latrodectus variolus).

Prefer the jumper shots although the black widow shots are good, just think the colour/contrast is a bit odd

This is an old thread, sorry. but that's L. mactans (southern), not L. variolus (northern). I really like these shots too-
