hoverfly feeding on sugar/honey spray - Syrphus sp.

Running crab spider on grape tendril

Black biting fly on the kitchen window - Simulidae - about 3.3mm body length

Female mosquito - trapped this in the toilet - could have been nasty !

Beautiful mosquito shots! This is a Culex, the adult females of which overwinter in protected locales. They do not bite when overwintering, but will not likely survive in a house (it being too warm). The fat abdomen is indicative of hypertrophied fat body, which they use as energy store when overwintering.

As a dedicated fan of hovers, I especially enjoyed the detail and lighting in the first photo.

Sadly, it will be at least 6 months until we see them again, in Maine where I live...perhaps we need to divert the Gulf Stream ocean current to warm up Maine! Why should the UK benefit so much from all that warmth?! (grins)

Yes we might get a lot of rain but we don't tend to see the temperature extremes you get over there

. Can normally find a few hovers around all Winter down here on the coast.
