I have a canon 24-105 that has slight barrel creep. The barrel only seems to come out slowely when I am holding the lens upside down. I am trying to sell it. Any idea how much I should ask for it. It is in mint condition and has everything like new.

peel back the rubber ring (on zoom ring?) to expose tiny screws, adjust in 1/4 turns to reduce zoom creep.
do a search, I found a thread a few months back that described this in much better detail. took a minute to do.

sorry I can't be more specific, don't have the lens any more.

hth

seems like they go for $825 to $925 on CL in my area, for what that's worth.

It's not a big deal. Most unit's do this at some point. I would not mess with it and reference the fact in the sale notice.

In reality, it is a big deal. I have this lens and it is a pain in the ass when you have your composition all lined up and the zoom changes on you. I was in some slot canyons with the lens pointed upwards and was fighting the zoom creep constantly.

Fixing it by tightening the screws is the way to go.

I wouldn't buy a lens with zoom creep even if it was 200 dollars less than a comparable one. It doesn't bother some people, so I would make sure it's a good deal (bit less than all the others) and disclose the creep. Most people will be happy to get a great lens at a good price. The ones that care will get a different one.

PS, if you DO mess with the screws, make sure to disclose that too.

Quick off-topic question (apologies in advance to the OP):

Do the screws work the same way on the 24-70? I have minor creep, I found the screws lining up the holes...but they don't move.

Can/do they fix creep when they do a CLA on a lens? If so, I'll just send it in, it's probably due for one anyway....

Its pretty normal on the 24-105. mine has a smidge of creep (doesnt just fall but a slow trickel down) but its loose enough that if I take it out of the bag from face down it will be at 105mm

My 70-300 DO has so much creep that I set the focal length by tilting the camera and never need to turn the ring by hand at all.

Whatever you do, don't try and glue it to keep it from creeping. It adversely affects other properties.

Mine has no creep at all nor would I buy a lens with creep. Lens creep becomes a problem when shooting on a tripod at any downward angle.

It is par for the course with this lens. Aside from zoom creep, mine still works great.

I would expect a discount if the owner did some work on the lens.

To those who refused to buy len with creep, which non-internal zoom does NOT creep? It may not out of the box, but over time, it is bound to happen.

My 24-105L creeps all of the way out fairly quickly. It doesn't bother me at all.

The creep on mine is starting to bug me (it happens when I walk with the lens down).

Does anyone know how well that "Goody" rubber band method works? How long does it last?

To summarize a few threads here... Zoom creep is a normal development with this lens after a period of use. It is not a defect in the sense that a lens that exhibits creep is worse than one than one that doesn't - the non-creeping lens is almost certainly going to have the issue eventually, too. It afflicts the breed as a whole, from all that I've heard and seen. (Frankly, I think it is something that Canon should address, at least by way of an update to the lens design. I'd even be happy with a tension adjustment ring as on the 100--400.)

It is a problem when you shoot with the camera pointing down, for example while doing certain types of close-up photography. I haven't tried the "fix" yet, which suggests that while it is a problem it hasn't been a major enough one for me to do anything about it!

I've never adjusted my lenses, but not to sound like a jerk, I wouldn't think that it would need to be disclosed.

It is a few screws and for all the more they need turned, as long as the lens is functioning in working order, I don't think it matters. Certainly if it was too tight or tightened to the point where it caused damage, then that's a problem but if it is adjusted and working, what's the problem.

You say that you won't buy a lens with zoom creep, does this mean ones that are prone to it too? For instance any heavy zoom that I know of can and will through use have zoom creep.

I would liken the adjustment to someone changing the oil in their car, it is a normal proceeds that will occur through use.

To the op, don't lower your price one penny for it. Either service it yourself, have canon do it or not do it, but advertise the product 100%. If it works, say so. If it has problems, say so.

I know if I bought a lens and it worked, I could care less of you or Elmer fudd adjusted it. B

Lens creep doesn't bother me at all. My 24-105L does it. I use the Lens price database, Lens$db: http://tinyurl.com/jcolwell-lensdb to figure out how much to charge or pay for used lenses. I wouldn't modify the asking price for zoom creep.
