Just got me a Planar 85 MMG in almost mint condition with metalhood 4, 67-86 ring, pouch, contax filter and paper work. I didn't need it but the condition and the fact that it was a MMG sealed the deal. I am happy!

I think you're going to like it - I have been using the Contax metal hood system - buying on Ebay cheap auctions or KEH deals - the system - including the hood caps - work excellent. The Ebay BIN's and some KEH's are way to expensive - wait for the right price.

Have fun with the new lens!

I have had it before and it was really nice. Quite compact as well.

I've bought some lenses in the past because of your beautiful shots, but I won't succumb this time (and, I mean it).

But, I do look forward to seeing what you do with this one.

side note: and please do post some macro shots with the 100-300

I looked at the old MTF charts of Zeiss today and to my surprise the C/Y 84/1.4 appears to be better than 85N! sure the charts are only part of the picture, but it did surprise me.

It's supposedly somewhere between fantastic and amazing at medium to long distances when stopped down a bit (say f4)

It's definitely on my radar 'cause I dont like the rokinon/samyang's character and colour much. Im looking for a bit more pop

I've been obsessing over this lens for the past few days, looking at tight portraits taken with it. It renders so beautifully, the way the DoF drops off and almost leaves a soft rim light that looks like halation around the subject. Also seems to do the "Melt into the background" to subjects at a certain distance rather easily. Lots of character wide open.

contax N 85/1.4 and CZ 85/1.4 are two totally different lens designs.
The N 85 is designed more for portraits as it is sharper in the center and softer in the corners compared to the CZ 85. The N 85 performs much better than the CZ 85/1.4 at close distances wide open, which is the achilles heal of the CZ/85/1.4 and even the new Z* 85/1.4.
Also, the bokeh of the N 85 is smoother than the CZ 85/1.4.
Unfortunately, the N 85 costs a lot more than the CZ 85/1.4.

Financially,
Unconverted N85 = CZ85 x1.5 = CY85 x2 = SY85 x4.
If converted, it becomes N85 = CZ85 x2 = CY85 x3 = SY85 x6.

Emotionally,
I bought 2 CY85, wished that I have gotten 1 N85 instead

Fun times, Anden.

I just had Jim Buchanan do conversions on my CY 85 and 100 and the stability of both is now great. Adapter for 85 used to be a little floppy.

Haha! Just skip this thread then :-)

I will try to shoot some macros with the 100-300 tomorrow.

The Samyang sure looks nice but it can hardly match the feel of the Contax...

The 85N is too costly for me so I canīt comment.

It is a great lens but last time I had it I decided I liked my 85L better. Will see what happens this time...
