Hi,

For those of you using this lens, how far off is your actual infinity setting? I used LiveView on my 5dMk2 and 7d to check, and it is on the "U" of the UMC printing on the barrel. Also, pretty strong focus-shift going from f2.8 to f5.6. I am pretty impressed with the contast/resolution, and will use PTlens to take care of the distortion issues.

Regards,

Edd

Î will have it by next week. Going to Berlin, Germany. My son had kept it for me. It is the Canon mount and I will attach the AF chip. Of course I will try it out in Berlin, since I will have 4 weeks vacation over there. Will find out about the infinity issue.

Thank you for your reply! I am curious about the AF chip as well...mounting may pose a problem; not sure it is worth the trouble based on the extreme DoF. Their 85mm f1.4 is another story....

Regards and a fun visit to Berlin,

Edd

Huh, not too fast - I was on the Photokina on the weekend.
Probably you know my Samyang 14 mm / 2.8 test site? I had this problem with my lens too, on ~ 0.8 meter on the scale an infinite object was sharp.
I adjusted that with some thin shims under the mount ring.

Here on page 17 in Polish language or here in German - left side the Samyang Fokuskorrektur are other methods of doing the focus correction.

Markus,

Thank you for the insight....most helpful and beautiful photos for "test shots". I am German & Polish "challenged" so the other websites would be of little use .

I will probably end up using a test fixture colimated at infinity and actually adjust the focus mounting ring to zero it in. Simplest fix is just make a "new" infinity mark, and hope the scale is accurate for other distances.

Also, one of your shots was used as a "correction master" for PTLens? Good to know...an actual user vs. raw data points....

Again, thank you for your time and consideration.

Edd

I am challenged in all languages expect German :-)
Because of this some of my DIY instructions are only in German language at the moment. But I plan to do some transaltions. At least my Photo-DIY link directory is available in German and English.

One user in a German photo forum asked if I could send one of my images to PTLens, I read the instructions, doesn´t understand them fully, and so did he the job with my picture.

I like my Samyang 14 - because it generates pictures I want, and it was cheap enough to buy it. But my lens is not a good one. I had the problem with the false focussing scale. I corrected that on the mount with the metal shims. But I noticed that the correction went away, as I looked at some pictures that I have focussed with help from the focussing scale. That irritated me not enough to check the lens thouroghly.
Some time afterwards I prepared a photo trip where I want to hold the camera above people - and I realized that three screws on the lens barrel were loose :-/
So I think the quality control of Samyang it pretty bad - at least in the first weeks.

Just received mine today, canon mount on my 5DII. Had a ZE 21 prior to this and am using an EG-S screen and had no issues with focus. Taking a few pics from my balcony, I am having extreme troubles focusing it as I cannot tell through the viewfinder if it is in focus or not. Used the markings on the lens as a go by focusing at infinity on an object about 150yds away, pulled it up in Aperture 3 and it was not in focus at all... Also, downloaded the 10 image trial of PT lens and the lens profile is not in there. Not sure if this lens is for me. May have to get another ZE 21 if I decide I do need a wide angle lens. Also, is there a focus confirmation chip that I can put on this? I am sure that would help tremendously.

OK. I see that you can buy the chip on ebay and glue it on but to be honest, not sure if I want to mess with it. Anyone know if they sell actual EOS mounts with the chip so that I can just unscrew mine and screw that one on? Seems like it would be easier...

Haven't used this lens but pretty much any new lens will not have infinityfocus at the infinity distance setting.

Would you mind explaining this one for me? Doesn't take much to confuse me but I don't really understand this comment....

Yeah, I really think I will have to get an AF chip installed as the FOV is just so damn large with this lens. I have 20/10 vision with an EG-S screen and even wide open trying to focus is a bitch...

My version came with a very curved focus field. At 1m on the scale the center was sharp but the corners were soft and at infinity the reverse was true ( seen using live view on a 5DII) Stopped down to F8 and 2-3m on the scale was a reasonable compromise. The lens has an internal focus system so is very sensative to the flange to focal plane distance being correct. I partialy dismantled the lens and found it has adjustments so you can get a flatter feild of focus so at infinity get center and corners equaly sharp but the center sharpness is not stellar no matter what distance it's focused at so it's a compromise rather than a perfect solution. Maybe it's optimised for crop sensor cameras ?

That's not what the tests done on FF showed (don't remember if that was from lenstip or photozone or something else).

I may be rushing things but I may just put it in the FS forum and grab a CV 20 3.5 instead. I am not one to pull lenses apart on my own Especially when it is new and only used once...

I love the example. Can you give us some data regarding what it was stopped down to and what you focused on? This is my first UWA and not sure what i am doing wrong. I try to focus wide open but unless extremely close, cannot get good focus much less see to do so.

You probably don't have a camera with Live View? I've seen mention several time of this lens having focus shift, meaning that the focal plane shifts when you stop down the lens. Focusing stopped down tends to be very difficult with wideangle lenses though...

Why did you sell the ZE 21? Too big/heavy for you? It would be the nr.1 UWA lens on my list.
I think infinity focusing is likely to be more accurate with the CV, but at f/3.5 focusing through the viewfinder won't be as easy as with the ZE 21.

I am using a 5DII and even tried LV to no avail and I have 20/10 vision no less ... I loved the 21 ZE but just didn't use it enough and yes, carrying that thing around was like having another child, yet more expensive :-) I figured i could always get another and just wanted to

@bigkidneys: What part of my post makes you go
(I did read about the reason why you got rid of the ZE21 so no need to explain that anymore.)
