Some people have problems with calculations :-)

The Quadra has :
400Ws, two heads, two accus (both app 150flashes on full power and MANY more below), recycling is fast, remote controlled and skyport.
Modellinglight, and videolight, stands, nice reflector and an option for a convertor ring so you can fit your Elinchrom boxes.

Now let's see what a system costs that is equal.
2x 580EX (SB900) but you than have 65ws (so you would need app 4 to get close)
2x Quantum propacks (to get the 150 flashes) but they are a LOT slower than the quadra. Actually you would need 4 because the quadra is delivered with 2 accupacks)
1x trigger
1x receiver
2x stands

But than you:
Don't have the speed, the video and modelling light, remote control for output, POWER, flashduration is incredibly fast (app 1/5400 with both heads connected).

But you do have:
E-TTL (TTL), smaller units

Options are plenty for both systems, with Elinchrom of course their own sets and with system strobes Lastolite.

I think that when you have a WORKING setup the difference between the both systems are not that much.

NOW.....
You start adding a ringflash for app 300-400 Euro and you have a system that will probably be cheaper than the classic "strobist" solution.
Remember this is when buying all new.

Both have their own market, but the Quadra is by no way more expensive than a good classic strobist setup but gives you a LOT more options.

Would love more info on the Ranger Zoom A.

- Price and availability?
- LED Modeling light... can we get continuous instead of 30s limit with the Ranger RX Packs?
- How many degree changes in beam spread would one get from a 7" reflector.

@Mumbles76, thanks
@mikejl29, the only thing I can answer is that there is now a continues modelling light with LED, it's very bright, when you use it constant there is a fan, when you want you can also power down the fan BUT when it overheates it will lower the lightoutput on the leds so you can see a drop in output, but there is no noise.

Also the fans are changed to intelligent speeds, so not on/off but in several steps.

The zooming flash tube is exciting. I've long thought that the flash tube is recessed too far in for the beauty dish.

Not much, did not shoot with it yet.
But seeing how it looks it would be awesome for fashion, place it from a distance and have some stunning crisp images.

There is no mention of the Rotalux Deep Indirect on the Elinchrom site yet.
However it is shown in their new brochure. Link to PDF

Its high on my list too, I contacted both Dutch and British importers, but nothing on availability or price yet.

Frank, thanks for jumping in here. The ranger head is sure exciting but it's the Gossen meter that really sounds cool. I'm a Sekonic fan but since I went with the Skyport I miss the PW capability in my 358. I can't find a direct web site for Gossen and was wondering if the is any time line or if that new meter is available yet?

Thanks,

Gregg

Hi,

Here's the web site. The meter sure looks interesting. Note the part about eventually being available for other light systems.

Well we all know Fotoflits will probably have it first.

If they have it I can have it a day later......

On a picture posted on twitter by the FlashCentre you could see that the design is similar to a regular Deep Octa, but with a reversed mount attached on the front side of the speedring.
