What a great series!
# 2 is the tops for me. That look and pose is priceless!

Awesome shots. Amazing capture of them blowing their noses. Would you mind sharing what would be a good lens to bring for Galapagos?

Thanks

This is what I took: 1Ds3, 1D4, 24-105, 15 FE, 70-200 f/2.8 IS II, 500 f/4 IS, 1.4x TC.

The 70-200 was the most used. Any basic Galapagos kit IMO should include that lens along with a 1.4x TC.

The super telephoto was used several times, but not because the wildlife is far away but because the backgrounds are terribly distracting. A super telephoto (with extension tubes to get closer to the wildlife) is great when you want to blur out the background.

Here's what I'd take going back depending on which system I shot:

Canon: Pair of 1-series bodies, 24-105 (or 24-70), 70-200, 300 f/2.8 or 500 f/4.
Nikon: D700 and D300, 24-70 (or new 24-120), 70-200, 200-400.

A brilliant series.
Shooting the salt from their nostrils was a kick to watch, but I didn't get any good photographs of it. You did, and I am green with envy.
Excellent work here.

Thanks Charlie. I give inspiration credit for that image to Andy Biggs, as he was the one who observed their behavior and told me what to look for in order to time firing the shutter.

Interestingly, the 1D4 ended up being too fast as I kept getting frames just before the "sneeze" and then the next frame was a little too late (thats what you see in #4). #3 was taken with the 1Ds3 which was just "slow" enough such that the very first image captured was at precisely the right time. Go figure...

Spectacular shots that work both in color and B&W. I really love that second shot!
