p.1 #1 · 60D with 17-55 or 5DII with Tamron 28-75 ?
Hello, I would like some advice.
I currently use an old 350d, (which still is nice) with a Canon 17-55 2.8 IS lens.
It's a great combo, IQ-wise, but I'm interested in a nicer camera body. I miss a good viewfinder, and a better screen would be nice too.
I am now debating whether to get the 60d, which has a lot of nice features i'd like, such as the swiveling screen and better handling , OR if I should be so bold as to get a used 5dII, for the extra IQ, depth of field niceness and general awesomeness.
I can get a used 5dII for about 2100$, and I wouldn't get the 60d until the price hits about 1400$, so there's a good price difference.
But if I'd sell my 17-55 IS, I could prbably get almost 1000$ for it, to go to the 5dII...
The thing is, I have a Tamron 28-75 2.8 sitting unused on my studio shelf, (a lovely lens used on my 350d til I got the 17-55) which supposedly is a very good performer on a FF-camera.
I have also considered the weight issue, and to my surprise I found that the 5d+Tamron would actually weigh less than the 60d+Canon!! (1360g vs 1400g)
(my current 350d+canon combo is 1185g, so either upgrade will not make a ton of difference [pun intended] )
NOW, as for IQ, I am not sure what would be the best choice. The Canon 17-55 has IS, which is very nice, but a 5dII would be better in low light, which should equal out a stop or two?. The Tamron has slower autofocus, but is probably almost equally sharp as the canon.
What should I do? I am grateful for your thoughts.!

5D Mark II will give you much better IQ in general, you can collect better lenses over the time, or start with some cheaper primes (35/2, 50/1.8, 85/1.8) and with those IQ will be higher than 60D with 17-55/2.8

Strangely enough, as much as I'm inclined to say 5DII and 28-75, the lens you have is hands and toes better than the Tamron!!! And the Canon MSRP on the 60D is $1099.00. If you're willing to spend up to $1400 on a crop body, the 7D also fits in there with a Refurb coming in at $1400 also(and under the Canon Loyalty Program @ $1119.00). So my choice in this instance would be the Crop body(either 60D or 7D) and keep the lens you have...Besides, the range on the 17-55 IS is about 15mm longer, and you have IS!!!

for the life of me I cant see what the 60D really gives over the T2i. if you want the speed then as Reno said the th7D is a nuch more attractive body.
As for the 5D2 if you have the 5D2 sitting on a shelf then yes but you could also sell it and the 17-55 and get either the 24-105 (much more comprable to the 17-55) and keep IS or get a used 24-70L (not small but the best)

I'd like a larger viewfinder, better grip, and I like the idea of a swivel lcd. Speed is not an issue.

This rules out the 5D II then... I think the 60D and 17-55 f/2.8 IS you have will be an excellent combo, and in the process save you $1000 ove the 5D II you can pick up for $2100.00. Enough for you to pick up a Classic 80-200L f/2.8 Magic Drainpipe !!!
(Just "realized" your in Sweden, puts the CLP 7D out of the question, and understand now your $1400 price tag for the 60D.)

Thanks for the 'drainpipe' tip
As for swivel lcd, as I said, I like the idea, but it's not a must...
I'm starting to think the 60d might be a good choice, but I recently saw a collegue's pics from the 5d2+50mm 1.8, and they were amazing. I actually SAW that that was something that would be hard if not impossible on a crop camera. (pop quality of shallow depth mainly)
Maybe I should mention what the camera would be used for:
I shoot a lot of artworks (paintings) in a studio, so there will be some tripod shooting, but other than that the camera would be used for family photos, travelphotos, casual portraits and such...
Also - I never use flash - so I shoot a lot at high ISO......so low noise is a plus.....

as for 60D:
used 7d for same or less than the 60D?? (tamron 17-50 or canon 15-85 vs 17-55 to save money??)
as for 5D2 it's very nice but:
the tamron 28-75 is crazy sharp on APS-C but it does get blurry at the edges on a 5D2 (although not quite as badly as the 24-105 at the wide end) although it depends a bit on what and how you shoot since some of the blur is just due to field curvature
edit: oops is see you already have the 17-55 and prices are not USD
anyway for maybe $150 extra you might get a used 7D, way better than the 60D

I guess it is hard to know exactly what the price of the 7D will be. We have an indication of where it will start, but not of where it will stabilize in a couple of months. Could be a bit lower.
Regarding to your initial question: I find it a bit odd to narrow choices down to 60D and 5DII.
What about the 5D (mark I) ? I would not be surprised if you could get it used for a much lower price than what you quoted for the 5D II, and this money could fund a lens (either an upgrade to your Tamron, or a prime, or a longer lens, if you are concerned losing some FL at the long end, when you mount the Tamron on a 28-75).

Thank you, the 5d would be a very nice step up in IQ ofcourse, but I was thinking of gaining a few more treats - like a really good screen and LiveView for tripod work.
If the tamron is rather poor on a FF i might have to go with the 60d. hmmm.

i'd take tamron 28-75 + 5d2 over a 60D
the 60D probably delivers about 16.5 5d2-type MP vs 21MP so you could still chop a little of the edges or downscale a bit and that might make up somewhat for the poorer edges but you'd still have the better SNR
60D has no micro-focus adjust, maybe that doesn't matter to you though but i consider it a foul mark

Micro Adjust i no biggie to me. My 17-55 focuses fine and thats about the only lens i would use on the 60d apart from the 50mm 1.8.
The main thing keeping me from deciding on the 60d are pictures like these: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3126472/5d2_5018_1.jpg http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3126472/5d2_5018_2.jpg
Even though they are web-sized it seemed clear to me when I saw them that they were made with a FF camera, and that I would not be able to take shots like this with a crop camera.
Am I correct? Or is it mainly the lens that is responsible for the nice look here?
( I learned later that these were taken with a 5d2+50mm 1.8)
p.1 #14 · 60D with 17-55 or 5DII with Tamron 28-75 ?
I see no reason at all why the shots above could not have been taken with a crop camera. imho it's pretty much imposible to tell FF from crop on web sized shots.

Very nice pics there beautox! hmm..
So you mean that my examples above could have been made with, say a 350d with comparable fixed wide aperture lens on a crop camera, for example the 35mm 2.0 ?
Do you others agree?
p.1 #16 · 60D with 17-55 or 5DII with Tamron 28-75 ?
Absolutely could be made with any camera in the EOS lineup, even the 1D, 10D or original Digital Rebel...It just all depends on how you use it, and what features are "important" to YOU...
p.1 #18 · 60D with 17-55 or 5DII with Tamron 28-75 ?
I disagree. I think I can tell even at a web size that the pictures above were made with a full-frame camera, especially on the second one. It is probably due to the depth of field. If the second, for example, were shot at f/1.8, you'd need to shoot an equivalent picture on APS-C at 31mm, f/1.1. And for a person willing to invest in fast lenses like the 35L / 50L, they will shine even more on a full frame camera (if one is interested in shallow depth of field).

Ah. that is what I was afraid of.
That short depth of field is so tempting....

And also, to get even close to the equivalent of the DOF of those picures on a crop camera - getting the 35L- would cost me about as much as a used 5d2......sigh....
