I've picked up the D700 this week, not much time to shoot with it yet, but it definitely has a nice feel to it (better when I get the grip). Mine has a brightscreen in it already, so I don't know how the stock screen would compare. Manual focus with the split screen is cquite accurate, with the microprism & matte area ... still getting used to.
It is nice when using the native F-mounts to have aperture set and still be viewing wide open, with the camera stopping down the lens upon shutter release. I have noticed though, that I can actually feel the aperture closing & opening during the shot. Makes me wonder how much that movement impacts handholding @ slow speeds ... or does it serve to offset the shutter movement, hmmm, time will tell.
I definitely like the shutter response of the D700 better than that of the 5D. It is on par with the 1D MK II & II N.
One problem I've been having so far is that with respect to my Vivitar 120-600, the metering grossly overexposes ... gives readings of 1/20 or so when shooting 'sunny 16' @ ISO 200 wido open 5.6-8 or any aperture setting, haven't figured that one out yet.
The AA filter on the Nikon is a bit heavier than the 5D, but that should only be an adjustment in post for sharpening technique, etc. Overall, pleasing enough.
I'm still going to be wrestling with whether to keep the 5D or the MK II or II N ... or none of the Canon's. Other than on the wide end of FF vs. 1.25 crop I like the hndling of the MK II better than the 5D. Given that I've got FF covered with the D700 and the 20mm 2.8 ... I could probably live with the MK II just fine which would keep me in Oly & C/Y mounts okay.
More to think about as I learn more ... input always welcome.
