Same feelings about the Zf here too Mary.

Ok, I asked Mary, now I'll ask you. What about it makes you unsure?

Come on folks... give Leighton a hand here. Clearly he has a bit of loose change lying around that needs a home...

Am enjoying the photos posted as well as the banter back and forth. My Df sits to my left and will likely be taken for a stroll this afternoon. I was curious whether they're still available on E-Bay and found a great many listed. I know the camera has been around for awhile and they human nature tends to believe newer is better... though we know that sometimes older is better... or at least more fun.

I've no doubt that old dogs can learn new tricks, but I also believe if it ain't broke... don't fix it. We'll each have to work that out for ourselves. Happy shooting everyone!

Quite the task. I will try not to let you down. Df is taking a rest this weekend while I reacquaint myself with a D700. Sweet camera.

I got a new monitor recently and we are not in good terms with respect to colours. I feel the reds are just a bit extra. Still working on it.

OK, so I was somewhat disappointed in my ultra-collector R-Nikkor 5cm. Uber proto is no good to me if I cannot use it.
Outdoors even a bright sky would cause ugly flaring, tried the Nicca shade for the 5cm 3.5, it vignetted and did not fully cure the problem. Richard Shaw (Nikkor repair site) has one in Leica mount and complained about the flaring as well. He needs to read this post.

Got creative and bought an inexpensive 34.5mm chinese filter that appears to be of good quality, none of the known manufacturers seem to make 34.5mm filters.

Bought an Ednalite 34.5mm series VI filter holder and a series VI shade, that did it!

This RF Micro Nikkor seems to be the sharpest S Mount NKJ lens,

So this posting is to emphasize the importance of shades with old lenses, and to express my relief that the uber collector is actually useful, otherwise it would be sold.

You are correct of course Rafael and thank you.
I really enjoyed shooting with it, looking for ANYTHING that would be a good subject for an ultra narrow DOF.

Another nighttime shot, a rarity for me. 85mm H. It's interesting to see reflections pop up in different spots due to the extreme dark plain background. The line was for the use the portable climbing wall for free.

Were you using any filter? I've had reflections appear unexpectedly in nighttime shots with a UV or Skylight filter on the lens [just for protection]. Sometimes removing the filter gets rid of the reflections. They only seem to show up against a black, nighttime sky. The reflections are so faint that they are effectively undetectable in the daytime.

Thanks George, Acros+R and a monopod :😀

Felt a bit self concious at first but soon forgot all that once I started finding subjects for shallow dof (apart from Security Guy)

The foot of the lens is really annoying though ! Small, really close the the body of the lens, no 2nd hole to add another bolt/screw to stop the arca swiss plate from spinning.
Any suggestions anyone?

Leighton & George, thanks for your kind words. I often don't post because I can't decide if something has merit or is just simply inane. Since travel doesn't seem to be part of my life right now, I have to content myself with observing—and sometimes recording—the play of light on the everyday and familiar in my surroundings.

IF I was only going to use the small prime Z lenses like the 40, 28, or 26 then probably a slam dunk or IF I did not have a cabinet full of excellent legacy F mount manual focus lenses. But to be a primary manual focus shooter, I think I will have the same issue I had with the Zfc body. The required size of an adapter to shoot manual focus lenses. And even with CPU chipped lenses like the 45p or modified chipped lenses you still cannot use the aperture ring on the lens to control aperture. You have to set it to minimum aperture and control it with the command dial on the body.

If someone really enjoys the experience of shooting manual focus lenses, then the Zf with the native Z mount Voigtlander lenses is probably the way to go with that body. Heck even off brand Chinese manual focus lenses would give a better shooting experience. If you are going to go retro, then go all the way or go home.

I feel the Z bodies with the big deep grip like the Z8 give better handling using adapters and legacy glass. Just my opinion. Now where is my FM and box of film

Andy,

I have an Arca compatible lens plate on mine with an anti-twist lip. Similar to this one

I forget the brand name I got, but wanted to give you something to visualize with that link above.

Plumbing is everything in this hobby Rafael. Glad you were able to sort it out. Results look outstanding!

Thread pitch is my biggest challenge in finding filters/step-up/down rings and hoods for the old rare stuff.

Nope, no filters. And stopped down slightly too to get some stars in the point light sources. About the only filters I use anymore are polarizers and ND's. I just put it down to the older coatings in some difficult scenes (bright lights with dark background). Perhaps the sensor cover is reflecting light back as well. The camera was on a tripod, and the prior shot had the exact same reflection and flare spots. There is a one stop exposure push, plus a plus "24" shadow push in post.

To each their own. I enjoy choosing an aperture, setting it on the lens, focusing, composing, done! I let the camera set the exposure and they hardly ever fail. Maybe choose the ISO in lower light. Like George says, if you are doing MF do Manual everything, I don't care about the adapter, just use it so I can use the lens I want. Cosmetics of a Z camera are only one: Ugly, so adding an adapter does not change that. Maybe the Df will be pretty, have yet to see one.

What's your thoughts on it that makes you not sold?

Leighton, I really, really like the ergonomics, looks, and layout of the Zf. I already have the 28 and 40 SE lens and love them. I really love how my Z6ii works with them both in studio and for walkabout, ie kinda like a Z750 if you will. They are modern and not just in appearance and I can use my MF lens + FTZ with the Z6ii if I choose. It is my walkabout choice at this time.

The Df used F mount lens with no adapter and worked great at that. The images were very pleasing to me and I really hated to part with the Df and hoped I guess, that a Df 2 would appear some day with the exact layout of the new Zf. At first blush, the Zf physically looks like that camera. But, and it's a big but, I don't want Nikon to create manual focus Z lens to take the F mount's place. I actually want a digital camera that mounts like the Df, looks and functions like the Zf, and uses my old manual focus or F mount lens without using an adapter. This creature does not currently exist, nor is it likely to, with the advent of mirrorless. My feet are firmly in two worlds that will never be totally compatible.

Absent using a FTZ adapter, of which I have two, or a mythical yet to be available Nikon or third party adapter that pancakes nicely, while doing everything we would like it to do, I am not sure I want to spring for this camera when I can already use my D850 without an adapter or my Z8 or Z6ii with the adapters I already own. In other words, do I want to spend 2K to play? My leaning is towards no.

Mary

Cheers George, I used to have something similar but can't seem to find it.

Managed to find this one which should do the trick and is now on the way.
