I'd debated getting one of the long lenses for the system, but think I'm going to be quite content with the old reliable Nikon E 75-150.

Some 40-150 shots. Trying tracking AF which works OK with these swans that barely move but anything beyond that it won't lock on.

Crops, probably around 50%.

Light was good but the damned things kept facing AWAY from the light. They simply knew NOTHING about modeling, I just can't work with such models... :-/

These are few of the shots (from almost 800) I got where they actually faced towards the light, at least somewhat.

Another futile attempt in to the world of bird and wildlife photography

The talons are very sharp mind you! (And no, the talons weren't what I was aiming for )

Nice and sharp! Single point AF with C-AF should work well. BIF is the only thing one should be struggling with.

Thank you Bobby

Yeah I will need to experiment with it more, see how fast subject the E-M1.1 can keep up with. I used single point and C-AF for these and it ended up very well as far as where the focus hit so might be worth some more time

I have this inkling that you may be over-thinking your needs when you are comparing the D500 to the E-M1.2. Sure, the D500 is far superior when it comes to AF acquisition and tracking action ... but how much BIF work are you planning to do really? I know a lot of photographers who shoot mostly birds and BIF and only occasionally shoot other stuff. If you are anything like me ... I do maybe 20% birds/wildlife (of which maybe only 5% BIF); 75% travel and landscape work; and approx 5% portraits ... the E-M1.2 serves me rather well. But if you are seriously planning to get into bird and BIF photography in a big way, like Tony Markle, I would definitely recommend the D500 + PF 300/4 and/or 200-500 lens. Horses for courses.

You inkling feeling (thanks for teaching me a new word!) is completely right. I am overthinking it, much due to the fact that I have missed focus on birds of pray on two occasions now and I rather blame the gear then I do my lack of knowledge of shooting birds. The two occasions have been my only two occasions trying so I have lots to learn and rather then changing system it's better to freaking learn it.

And yes, I am planning on shooting lots of things just as I do today but I am also planning on doing a whole lot more wild life and bird photography. Looking through many of the birds and wild life threads I see lots of stationary subjects though and this alone is reason enough to know jump the ship because of one single factor (AF).

I know the E-M1.2 serves you very well, as does the 1.1 me! I should just put the money in a longer lens if anything, or maybe the 1.2.

Thanks for being a voice of reason

I am no better than you or anyone else who don't regularly shoot BIF. Experience matters if you want to be good at BIF and we both lack that. The fact that the E-M1.2 is not really suited for BIF work is not helping us ... but we should not use that an excuse. It can be done - it just takes a little more effort and a lot more practice - and your keeper rate will improve with time but the E-M1.2 will never be as good as a DSLR.

Keeping different systems is great if you can afford it, but it's a real PITA to get used to 2 different systems - and to take them on your trips. Heck, I am still learning how to use the Olympus camera properly - there are so many features and options that I am still totally clueless about! The E-M1.2 can do so much more than my skills will allow ... and this evident if you look at the work of the Olympus Visionaries - and these 2 guys (Nikon/Canon defectors!):

http://www.intufisuri.ro/2017/06/review-olympus-om-d-e-m-1-mkii-sau-cum.html

http://www.sulasula.com/en/olympus-for-nature-and-wildlife-photography-reasons-to-switch/
https://500px.com/sulasulacom

If the Olympus E-M1.2 is good enough for these pros, how can I ever say or complain that the E-M1.2 is not good enough for any type of work other than BIF? My images are nowhere near as good as these guys.

Yes you are far better then I am with BIF and most other things!
But yes we both lack the experience and as such I will try to get that rather then new gear. Maybe all this is just GAS at its worst. Not saying I don't want a new lens, or actually maybe more, I want the E-M1.2 rather then the E-M1 I do have left.

There is a lot of truth in "learning to use what one has". I don't know my Olympus good enough even after having shot with Olympus for over 5 years: Will try and dedicate my self to learning that, and learning to shoot better photos rather then taking too much time researching different gear from other manufacturers.

Yup those two guys have some seriously amazing shots, have seen them before (although I saw some new shots now) so thanks for the links! And the reminder that the person behind the camera can create amazing things with far lesser gear that this.

Thanks again for being a voice of reason

We all suffer from GAS because of all the talk about all the great gear in these forum pages. It's natural to want the best gear you can afford ... or think you can afford and cannot really justify! That's the price you pay for hanging around these pages. Knowing your equipment through-and-through so you can work quickly, and being able to make maximum use of the camera features is a big plus - and it will actually make a better photographer out of you. I would regard this as a skillset.

Think one can afford but can't really justify is a very good description
FM and internet all together makes GAS go hay wire!

It's like you say, experience and knowing the gear is far better then getting new gear that you never really learn.
I'll try and spend some more time in the kayak instead and see how close I can get to birds without scaring them, maybe I can live without the 300mm?
