my 580ex recently went down. the cost of repair is not worth fixing. now i can either buy a new 580ex or 2 used flashes, a 580exi and a 430exi for roughly the same price of the new 580exii. im not sure if i had bad luck or not but i had the flash for only 9 months before it blew. the new flash will have a 1year warranty. i do a lot of strobing and sometimes off camera. would i be better off getting 2 used flashes or should i get the 1 with warranty and add another one later down the road?

Only you are the best judge as to how many speedlite's you need...whether you like the menu functions (on the latest cameras) using the v.II Speedlite's...whether you require E-TTL or not, etc. However, I'll offer my feelings: I have read that (one of the reasons) the v.II Speedlite's were totally redesigned (particularly the 580EX) was to 'beef-up' the electronics and make it more reliable under heavy duty use (especially while using external battery power). Personally, I would rather have a 580EX II or a 550EX over a regular 580EX. As for the 430EX (II), I think they are fantastic and VERY compact...in fact, I love 'em...as long as you don't need them as a 'master' or external high voltage power. Of course, if you don't need E-TTL (or built-in wireless function), then there are PLENTY of other flash options out there.

What happened to the 580? I know there's a place that sells the parts alone. You can sometimes repair them yourself, if you're careful.

my first 580 just blew up when i picked up the cam off the table and fired a shot. i have since picked up a new 580exii and loving the new upgrades so far. it seems better built and im really liking the new battery door and metal foot. 1 year warranty to boot!
