Gusts

A ND4, ND8 and a polarizer together reduced the light to allow this 1/2 second exposure showing the gusts of wind that buffeted this tree.

I like it, Paul. The blowing tree dominating the scene with the steady backdrop gives a really nice effect. Also, has a very painterly quality to this. Mike

Thanks for the kind words Mike. I had a cool idea for the contest ( this wasn't it ) but didn't have time to get the props. I was worried the picture would look like camera shake and that would be the "motion" that I was showing, so I included the hills behind in the picture to anchor it. Hope the color looks O.K., as this is the first image I edited with my new monitor that I am still getting used to.

I think you made the right call on this, Paul, with the mountains in the back. Adds a great juxta, and the tree still has enough sharpness to complete the scene.

It does have alot of greenery in the scene, but the tree bark has a nice goldtone, and the scene looks to be alot of greens, so it does look good.

Really nice Paul -
I like the blur and the sharpness of the tree as well as the static background.
Nice capture and interpretation of motion -

Excellent execution of this idea. I was toying with this very idea and looking for a wind-affected tree, but am having some adventures with taming the new beast (10D) so I took my highest known source of energy and constant motion instead - my son.

Thanks guys, I just did a double check to make sure I hadn't copied someone else's concept. I hate it when that happens! This was shot from my backyard where I was trying to decide between this shot and a swinging lantern, but the lantern looked like I had tipped it with my finger and that big tree certainly was captured "in situ." So, I post this picture as evidence that not all my pictures come from the kitchen table studio!

Paul, great take on the assignment. I've had an image in my head similar to this, however I haven't run across the right tree with the right wind and background and light to make it happen. Lots of factors have to come together to make a shot like this. Nicely done.
