What about this situation...
You're shooting some insects who like to walk along grass blades and so you set yourself up on a tripod parallel to a grass blade so that focus issues are minimized. Stop down as needed.
Shooting video, I think you can get by with shutter speeds in the 1/30-1/50 range, far slower than if you were trying to freeze a single still image. This fact alone should help tremendously.
Even at, say, f16 or so, you should be able to manage in bright sunlight, no?
