Cool shot. I particularly like the three different "orbs".

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Thanks.

The flourescent overhead lighting in the room was really dim due to the dark walls, but it seemed to accentuate the fall off a bit more than a typical room ... so I went with it.

What's the significance, if any, of TWA 87? I looked it up and that's not one of the flights that hit the Twin Towers or Pentagon.

I remember doing just that back in 1983. I do solemnly swear or affirm, to defend the Constitution.... Nice to see it still matters to some! Very nice photo, and it must have been a real challenge to shoot while experiencing such a wide range of emotions. Bravo!

BTW - the Navy is a great choice! No matter where you go, you have your bed with you! I wasn’t that smart - I chose the Army.

Cheers,

Greg

Funny thing ... I have no clue what the TWA 87 is, so I'll have to ask her in a couple weeks when we start mailing (yes, snail-mail) letters. This is a shirt from her youth group at church, so I can only imagine ??

greg ... thanks for your service as well. Since I was Navy 1980-1995, I really appreciate you doing a job that I didn't want to.

Emotions weren't too bad ... we had already had a lot of sappy Daughter/Dad conversations throughout the week leading up to her departure ... and she had already given me my 'marching orders' for no sappy stuff. I mostly wanted to do as much as I could to let my actions speak to her, so I put on my professional game face, best I could ... till she was done, then it was "High Five" and a big hug ... re-iterated by "Don't get sappy on me now !!"

Having a camera in hand, shooting manual focus/manual exposure, kinda diverts your attention a bit as well. My biggest concern was to not "embarrass" her by looking like a geek toting a ton of camera gear and fumbling through lens changes etc. As such, I pre-decided I'd go in with just my C/Y 50/1.7, no flash and make the best of whatever was there.

All in all, I'm pretty stoked about it. I got really lucky that she was on the end of the row.

A compelling image, with a lot to say. Nice work, Rusty, and my best to your daughter. It's nice to read that you shoot Manual focus too (I thought I was alone) Actually, I've never used the AF feature on my camera, haha. Full manual aperture, exposure and focus is just more familiar and comfortable for me.

Best,
John

John ... thanks.

Funny you should mention the MF thing. I shot her H.S. graduation last year with AF ... and missed "The shot" because the light/subject contrast wasn't sufficient for confirm and the camera wouldn't fire.

Also, if you learned 'old school' there is just something about the FEEL of that aperture ring. I do shoot both aperture priority and full manual, situation depending, so you are definitely not alone (see Alt Gear Forum) for shooting manual focus.

I'll definitely check out the forum. My first body was a Canon A1, FD glass!

+1 ... same for me !!.

The A1 was defintely a classic, then I went 'old school' with a Nikon FE & chromes (hence manual exposure)

Yeah, I stuck it out with Canon. Though, I'm really liking the features of the Nikon digitals...

On 1D Mk II?

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Yakim ... yes 1D MK II ... it was operator error due to how I had the AF function set, but still

Mind you, this was around 8:30 in the evening, so light levels were quite low ... can't really fault the camera too much. I had pre-focused the shot, and was just waiting to release the shutter, but I didn't bother to change the AF mode, so it locked me out when it couldn't confirm focus due to the very low light level ... my bad. That sort of thing NEVER / CANNOT happen when using a MF lens without any AF electronics.

Live & learn.

BTW ... I fired up the 1D MK II after a couple weeks shooting with my newly acquired 5D ... the 1D MK II felt very nice to shoot with, it definitely has a quicker shutter release. I'm basically set now with a 5D & 1D MK II ... I like them both.

Absolutely. Just flip the switch first next time.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
