Those walls were a response to threats of invasion...... by our American friends.

There is no threat anymore, but the gates and walls are still there and they are surrounded by... tourists....

Are the walls really as thick as they look? What ten feet of brick? Looks like a fascinating well made structure.

I think it's more than 10 feet..... There is stairs on the other side and you can go up and walk on the gate and the walls. It's a beautiful structure....

Thank you for your comments.

If only walls could talk, eh.

The shot overall would have been more dramatic with the sidelight of dusk or dawn. I like how you included the bushes for perspective in the foreground. If only that red building wasn't in the background as a distraction to history!!

Sidelight.... hmmmm maybe if we could rotate the gate 50 degrees, and bring down a few buildings and maybe we could have a sunset shot...

It does make for a very nice scene. I like it. Well.....it really does need a sunset or sunrise.

Hmmmmm maybe I could go there at dusk and use a couple of speedlights...... with CTO gel to look like a sunset.... I can place a speedlight where I want...

Neat shot. I agree, another time of day would give some storytelling light for this formidable subject. Light can create mood; and something formidable lends itself to a bit more dramatic lighting, especially in an artistic sense. This is a great documentary style, very clear and cheerful. Response in this case conjures fear and the urgency for protection. Something darker would really bring out that type of feeling. I'd take some shots at sunrise and at sunset. I'd use a tripod and available (natural) light. Then try your idea with the CTO gel and a speedlight and compare.

Due to the orientation of the gate, there is no way to shoot it a sunrise, it would give a backlit pic.

Then how about a sunset shot ?

There is a huge hotel between the west horizon and the gate. I doubt it could be lit by a sunset ray of light.

I understand very well what is a dramatic lighting, but life is not always dramatic. Sometimes it's joyful, bright, colourful !

I photograph the way I feel, and last friday, with my P&S I felt like shooting this gate, in plain harsh mid-day sun.

It could be different, but it is like this for the reasons I explained....

Now, don't get me wrong, I appreciate all of your input, thank you very much, there is nothing worse than receiving no comments.

As a challenge, I will go back there as soon as possible and try to shoot at sunset, I swear, if there is ONE ray of sunset that hit this gate, I will shoot it !!!

I agree with what you're saying. It's your shot and must convey your interpretation and vision!!! Definitely all of us has our own ideas and taste. I wasn't suggesting any light be hitting your subject directly (that's not always possible or ideal anyway), but rather the color temp near sunset is so lovely. The shot as is is lovely; but they don't call the hour before sunset the "golden hour" for nothing. If you happen to do another shoot, think about seeing how you like a near-sunset shot for comparison sometime? :-)

Thank you Bev, you figured what I was saying and I agree with you as well.

Next week I'll go back there before sunset and see what I could get. There is also wonderful night photography to do there....
