What's the best, inexpensive, c/y wide angle (28mm and wider, no 35s)? Only ones I know of are the 25/2.8 & 28/2.8, unless I am missing something. So, which is better, 25 vs 28?

I think the consensus was the 28 is better in the c/y mount. I had it and it was all that is is repped to be. I sold it because it just wasn't wide enough for me and now I have a 24mm OM.

+1: the CZ28 is still by far the best value at this focal length, although the (much cheaper) Zuiko 28/3.5 has its fans, too . . . .

I'm shooting the Oly 21/3.5, 24/2.8 & 28/3.5 ... with my eye on the C/Y 28/2.8.

The Zeiss 18 & 25 have mixed reviews, from excellent to a little disappointing for a Zeiss, with the 25 faring stronger ... but the 28 rarely falls short of expectations, and compared with the Zeiss 21mm it is a bargain.

Depending on your definition of inexpensive ... the Oly's should not be overlooked for wide angle glass ... everyone should have at least one of the Oly's for the Oly colors alone ... different from the "Zeiss look" but very worthy.

I am getting to know the CY 28/2.8 and will post you a couple of images later today. While most makers can do very good 28mm lenses, this Distagon really delivers in the centre 'donut' and falls off pretty gracefully towards the far edges.

The 25mm CY is kind of the red-headed stepbrother of the lineup (no offence intended to feisty carrot-tops), though some express a liking for its style. Its MTF 40lp/mm falls off a cliff after 5mm off image centre, with poor corners - not good, but that is just contrast/sharpness of small objects.

I really like the 3D draw on the 28/2.8, edward k here thinks curvature of field is one of the 3D zeiss factors - lets just say it appears to have good 'depth' and leave it at that.

I think 28/2.8 is your best bet, Edgar. 18/4 and 25/2.8 are very nice but not quite as sharp as the 28/2.8 and cost more. 21/2.8 is... well... Price tag matches the quality of this gem.

Lord of the rings was shot in New Zealand, so he is not that far off in Australia...

Reinhard, this place is Kosciuszko National Park in Australia's small alpine area in southern New South Wales. It's a great walking area, empty of people, we saw 3 hikers in 3 days! We got lucky with morning fogs for this type of shot - it's autumn here.

The hut was lucky to survive the major bushfires in 2003, and the countryside recovered very well. For Lord of the Rings in Australia, that is Tasmania, an very beautiful state.

I like how the corners fall away from the hut in the closer image. regards, philip.

philip_pj ... sounds like a wonderful area.

I have fond memories of Australia (& NZ) as my travels took me to Perth/Freemantle/Albay to Brisbane to Hobart (Tasmania), as well as Auckland & Wellington (NZ). I was so taken by Tasmania, that I was going to name my son Hobart ... but my wife said otherwise, especially since we had three girls.

I remember shooting your beautiful morning fog ... unlike anywhere else I've seen.

As far as the soft history of the c/y 25/2.8, I do read that the MM version may be better than the AE version. Is this true? ..or is it just a rumour? ...or is it just better to just go with the more fail-safe & sharper 28/2.8?

For landscape the 28f2.8; but for anything else I prefer the 25f2.8. I'm 99% sure there was an optical change of some sort between the old ae and newer mm (there is a rather detail analysis by someone in europe (i think poland) that also commented on a change. Anyways I hated the ae version which was very soft in the corner the mm version which is what I currently own seems much better (both are very sharp in the center).

Another vote for considering the Oly 24mm f/2.8 unless you have some kind of reason besides image quality that you're chasing the C/Y for the purpose.
