As stated below, I intended to change my initial entry if I could get the time to set up the shot. I have and I did! My wife and I are celebrating our 4th Wedding Anniversary this week, so I knew this was the type of shot I wanted to do. I hope you like it!

I have another shot in mind that will require more set up and time which I don’t have right now (I hate working night shifts) so this will have to do for now.

Comments always welcome.

Looks yummy but to me(untrained eye), it looks a little hot on the overhead light unless that is what you are going for. Reason being is that to me, you are losing the fingers of the fork to the background.
But, if that is what you are going for, nevermind

Thanks who me — I toned down the highlights a bit. Hopefully that brings out more detail in the fork.

Greg,
Nice shot and concept. Having worked the graveyard shift years ago you have my sympathy.
I would like to see a whiter background or grayer you seem to be in between and it looks like a dirty white. I also would like to see the color in the wine. It seems to dark. This may be accomplished by just diluting liquid.
I like the shot and wouldn't have commented if I didn't.

I like the comp of this one. I agree the bg could be whiter.

Hi Larry. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I toned the background down to bring out the detail of the subjects. I shot this “high-key” and perhaps the flash level on the background was a tad too high. I’m a firm believer that there is more than white, gray and black, so I didn’t see a problem with it, but like you suggest, perhaps it’s not the best tone. If this ends up being my final submission, I’ll play around with it some more and see what I can come up with — perhaps something more in the cyan portion of the color wheel, but I hope to put together the vision I have Sunday or Monday night which would make it moot.

As for diluting the wine — that just plain blasphemous!

Hi Greg,

I see that you now have the bug for these types of shots (I'm exploring them, too). With that, I think you could resolve some of the aforementioned issues by adding a fill light to the subject that will cancel the shadows beneath them.

Also, you might want to add a slash of light, or even a powerful kicker to the background to increase the exposure (retain the beige tone, but lighten it).

As for the Wine, try red and blue food coloring in water. The result will certainly resemble Wine, but will also have a transparent quality that is more photogenic.

Just my opinions, of course.

Best,
John

Y — didn’t see you post there. Thanks for the comment. I will work on this some more, or reshoot it if my other plan doesn’t work out....

John, thanks for taking the time to add some valued advice. I simply used a flash that was mounted above the scene and flashed against seamless white paper, so I will play around with what you suggest and add another light to try and eliminate the shadows. Never thought of the food color idea!

BTW, I’d say you are beyond exploring!

Ah, get out of here, I'm a beginner. Also, if you're on a limited budget like me, buy a sheet of Vellum paper (8.5x11 or larger) from a local art shop. It's translucent, and closely resembles proper Diffuser you'd buy from a photo store.

Place this 6"-12" from your light source, (bow it out from the lamp in an arc) and it will spread light evenly over your subject. Ultimately, the light will have soft "fall-off", with silky, even shadows. It's a diverse technique, and should help you along.

Lovely shot but the plastic plate seems a bit out of place here.

Happy shooting,

Thanks Beverly. Actually it's a ceramic plate, but I guess it says a lot that you thought otherwise. Just another reason to try my other idea before the deadline!!

Thanks for all the comments on the previous photo. I received some excellent feedback and advice for that type of photography. But, alas, it was my intent to change the photo and I did.

Cheers!

Red wine with dessert Greg? I think you'll find a liqueur more suited for this dish. A romantic scene you have set up here for your anniversary. Congratulations and best wishes to you both.

Happy Anniversary, Greg! This is indeed a romantic scene, wow. From a photography perspective, there's a whole lot going on. The fireplace and all the candles at the top are almost too much to take in, taking away from even seeing the dessert at first. I couldn't figure out if I was seeing a reflection of the row of candles in the foreground until I looked carefully. Nice setup though, and the romance certainly comes through and shows off the full effect! Cozy and lovely.
