Dear FM'ers, Am I rude?

A participant in this forum sent me a PM stating that my comments are often rude. As I strive to avoid rudeness as much as possible, I want your honest opinion about this.

He gave me an example regarding this pic.

"Example of rude.
I love chocolate and I love children, but your photo does nothing for me. (In other words, I hate your photo) The child's face is poorly lit and the cropping is very unflattering. Her eyes don't pick up any light and her expression looks dead. The folded wrapper of the candy bar is messy and distracting and seems to be the main focal point of your photo.

Example of constructive criticism.
This is a clever take on the theme. I would like to have seen the girls face turned more towards the light so we could see the delight in her eyes as she munches her chocolate milk."

My problem is that while the first indicate that this pic is not good whatsoever, I do not consider it rude (of course, taking the brackets off). Harsh, yes. Rude, no. For me, rude == ad hominam (Dictionary: Discourteous or impolite, esp. in a deliberate way) but your view may be different.

I know that it happens to me every once in a while. Some of my pictures are not good, despite my efforts. It's O.K. I know I'm not the best photographer in the world. Not even in this forum. People like Strad, Beverly Guhl, vipermike and others are light years ahead of me and I often stated that in my comments. But am I rude to others?

If I asked you to categorize my comments, what will it be? Am I blind to my own rudeness? If most will agree, I'll rephrase my comments.

Again I ask you to give me your honest opinion.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

You aren't rude, Yakim. Also, your reactions to everyone's work should not be misconstrued as such. Actually, in a physical setting like the classroom, or a pin-up critique session in a studio, your queries would be an encouraging asset to the creative process.

I'm of a Graphic Design background: Decisions are objective, and no choice is arbitrary. There's no room for elements that don't lend themselves to the concept, and the designer's preferences and taste have no place in a client's project. I'm comfortable with this language, and also approach my photography with the discipline of Design principles. Coincidentally, I also see this creative approach in you when you question the relevance of even the slightest nuance of a photo. I appreciate your observations! However, objective creativity isn't for everyone.

Conversely, I believe this forum is composed of photographers with an affinity for the internal subjectivity of fine art. After all, subjectivity is the thrust of fine art! Although what they consider primary, secondary, or even tertiary information in a photo has potential for investigation, the completed image probably has more sentiment and emotion attached to it, and the photographer's stance should be respected, too.

In addition to the aforementioned, the forum is comprised of text responses, therefore lacking true Human emotion. Intense, honest analysis of a photo can sometimes be misinterpreted as sterile, threatening, presumptuous, or even condescending to the photographer. We all have to step back while reading comments, and try to perceive them in a constructive light.

On a side note: Myself included, this forum has been chock full o' drama the past few days, and we should all take a deep breath, embrace each others shortcomings and achievements, evaluate, learn from, and grow together.

Yakim ...

Anything but rude ... sometimes a bit misunderstood for being a bit direct or misunderstanding the cultural language differences in word utilizations ... but never rude. Actually quite respectful. We've been reading each other for a year or so now several times each week, and you even had an outpouring of support for when you were in the hospital.

No worries ... your credibility as a person is in tact. Sometimes people have a differing perspective of what is proper. For most of us here in FM, while we like nice comments of our efforts, we really do want honest feedback. I can remember a shot or two of mine that you didn't care for. We know that opinion & preference are highly individualized ... and take no offense for it.

I think your assessment of the difference between harsh & thoughtful honest constructive criticism is dead on ... and harsh is not necessarily rude. When I think of rude ... I have a name (or two) that come to mind ... definitely NOT yours.

Don't sweat it ... don't worry about needing to change. Direct, even if a perceived a bit more harsh than intended (occassionally) is not the end of the world ... hey, we all have off-days, both as photogs and as people. It's the long run that really tells the story on both.

Kent

Happy Shooting ... I borrowed that from someone I know

Yakim, don't know you and haven't read many of your posts. So I'm certainly not gonna try to judge the content of your posts.

But will share something I learned a long time ago.

That is that one of life's great challenges is learning to disagree without being disagreeable.

(That has even more challenging in today's world of impersonal communication done through the keyboard and internet where you don't see the look on someone's face and where there is no inflection).

I personally believe it's possible to provide honest constructive criticism without being "harsh".

Yakim!

Firstly, I did not know you were in the hospital? I'm glad you are all right. Second, thank you for the compliment. You greatly flatter me, but "light years" does not do yourself justice. You are better than you think.

People have given you some good feedback. I think of you as outspoken, direct, and on occasion more abrupt than I would be, but I've never sensed any ill intent on your part. The word "rude" doesn't come to mind, no. You're just as often generous and kind and constructive. Given the diversity in the forum, I can see how some might think you're rude, yet others wouldn't.

Mark Twain said, "I can live 3 months on a good compliment." I think it's a beautiful thing to provide feedback that will help not hurt, i.e. do no harm. I'm not suggesting pampering or coddling people or not being real, just being a positive factor in the equation of life and realizing art is so subjective, who of us is "right"?

I once read that offering a compliment was inherently arrogant, i.e. because it implies you presume yourself fit to judge another! I always remember this, especially when offering any constructive feedback. What do I know? I've read books and articles, watched videos, and practiced, but I'm still learning like crazy. While I'm happy to share any acquired knowledge, I'm constantly aware that my opinion is only mine. If others value it that's fine, if not, that's fine, too. My goal is to be real yet find a way to uplift and encourage. I do try to find something to say about every image--as time permits!

So, I think it's good that someone wrote you of their concern (the forum needs to be self-monitoring), and that you have the willingness to subject yourself to group feedback and self-examination. There are lots of ways you could have responded. This shows great character, a good heart, and consideration for others. I admire that, Yakim.

Guys, Thank you for your opinions. They are most appreciated. I know where and how I strive to be but it is difficult for one to judge himself. Only through the mirror that his colleagues (may I dare call you friends?) place in front of him can he truly know.

Bev, you bring tears to my eyes. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
