p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Which 35mm, 50/55/58mm, 100mm, 180/200mm? n00b needs help :)

I've done a little bit of research in the past on alt. lenses; but I always forget a bit and need help on recommendations for what to get.

First of all, I am selling all of my L primes and switching over and jumping boat to alternative lenses (Canon 5D2). Mostly because of price and I want to use various anamorphic adapters which usually have a very small rear thread of around 2" (50ish mm).

What I am looking for/price range/etc.:

~All lenses MUST have no larger than a 58mm front filter thread. The smaller the better. Preferably and most wanted are 52mm or 49mm filter thread. But 55mm and anything less than 58mm is doable.

~My price range is anywhere from $5-$500ish per lens. I am expecting 500ish for rarer/faster lenses like 1.2 or 35mm 1.4, etc. And much less for typical lenses like a 200mm or 50 1.4 (but still have no idea what the prices are right now).

~Shouldn't be too rare, or actually not rare at all. I would like to get all of these lenses asap. Should be available on ebay regularly or on FM once in a while.

~Should work on 5d2 without any major mods or mirro hits/mods. Looking for ones that work with just an adapter.

~Please tell me the filter sizes and current prices the lenses are going for.

~I kinda wanna stick to just one brand for ease of mounting and also consistency of color. But, 2 brands will work.

~...I think that is about all my requirements for now, lol

So I am looking for a 35mm, a standard in the 50mm range, a 100mm, and something in the 180/200mm range. All primes of course. RIght now, I am looking for Nikkor AiS and also Zuiko OMs since they are in my price range and have good reviews...

~35mm: Right now I am looking at the Zuiko 35mm f/2 and the Nikkor 1.4. Are these good? Which should I get? If the Nikon, should I get the Ai, Ais or MF? Filter sizes?

~50/55/58mm: kinda lost here. I am really looking into getting a f/1.2. But which? OM 50 1.2, Nikon 50 1.2, OM 55 1.2, Nikon 55 1.2, Ai, AiS MF? I don't know the filter sizes either so help with that welcome too.

~100mm: I have no idea. Tried to do a search on here and ebay. Can't find any recos for a nice 100mm. Does Nikon make an old one (Ai, AiS, MF)? What about OM Zuiko? Filter sizes too please.

~180/200mm: Right now I am looking into the Ai or AiS Nikkor 200mm f/4. I have no idea if it is sharp or what. But, it is relatively cheap and easy to come by. And also has a nice small 52mm filter size

....please, any other recommendations and also opinions of the already stated lenses more than welcome.

Thanks!
E

ok...i think I narrowed it down to a few. Opinions & experience with these lenses welcome!

-35mm: Nikon 1.4
-50mm range: OM 50 1.2, Nikon 50 1.2, Nikon 55 1.2 (don't know the filter size to this one), (and I read the OM 55mm is soft.)
100mm: Zuiko f/2
200mm: Nikon f/4

As far as confirm adapters (I never owned alt lenses before, so I never bought adapters), do have recommendations as to which are best or which seller on ebay is best (since there are soo many)? Or, are they all the same and just get it from anyone on ebay?

With the lenses you're looking at, you may want to look into swapping your 5D2 for a D700 (no need for adaptors then). But that's another story.

- The Nikon 35/1.4 Ai-s is a decent lens, though not up to the 35L's standard's in terms of wide-open performance.
- There's plenty of normal focal length lenses to choose from. I'd look into a Zeiss 50/1.4 or a Voigtlander 58/1.4 personally (both have 58mm filters and can be had for under $500 used, with the latter saving you around $100). The Zeiss is bitingly sharp when stopped down a bit, though the Voigtlander may have the slight edge when it comes to oof rendition @ f/1.4.
- Nikon's 105/2.5 (52mm filter and <$200) is generally heralded as one of the best bang-for-the-buck portrait lenses ever made. It's small, cheap, and sharp wide open. I use one, and have been blown away by the performance considering the price I payed for it.
- I don't know much about the longer lenses, but I know the Voigtlander APO 180/4 is a highly sought-after (and rather tiny with a 49mm filter thread) telephoto. It may be hard finding one around $500 though (I've seen them go for around $750 in the Nikon mount).

nice... thanks for the info! I will look into those lenses

As far as 35's...I notice the nikkor 1.4 is pretty pricey at upwards to 7-800. How is the Zuiko 35mm f2? (not getting a 35L, had it back then, done with it, going all alternative lol)

..and, I am still wanting to know a good 50-55mm lens (really want a hard-stop old school lens, no EF mounted alts.). OM vs Nikon 50s & 55s..which are better? I read that the OM 55 1.2 sucks. So thats out. So deciding on 50 1.2 OM, 50 Nikon 1.2, or 55 nikon 1.2. Not really interested in new EF mount alt. brand lenses.

..which Nikon 105mm is better? The Ai or Ais? How does it compare to the Zuiko 100mm 2.0 or 2.8?

Zuiko 35mm f/2 is a little soft wide open but pretty nice stopped down.

If you can compromise on your focal length, Contax CZ 28/2.8, 50/1.7 and 85/2.8 makes a lovely lightweight trinity. They weigh less than 1kg combined. All uses 55mm, are below $500 each.

An alternative to the above alternatives would be Leica Summicron 35/2, 50/2 and 90/2. All uses 55mm but none can be had for $500 unless is some bashed up and worned out copy. The beauty is they all come with built-in hood.

My dream 55mm team would be Leica 35/2, Minolta 58/1.2 and OM 90/2. Note that the Minolta has mirror issues on 5D2

Most faster lenses would have larger than 58mm filter sizes.

Maybe you read one of my posts.
If you can wait, I guess there's a Samyang 35/1.2 for Canon coming in a few months. I'd buy a Distagon 28/2.8 or Zuiko 28/2.
50mm? Zuiko 50/1.2 all the way. I'd love to get one. 50/1.4 (> 1.1 mill serial#) is great as well.
For 100mm, there's the well regarded (I don't know it) Nikkor 105/2.5. I love my Zuiko 100/2.8.

I have the Nikon 200 f4 and it is a really nice lens. I never tried it on the 5D2. I have it listed for sale now....

Look into the Voigtlander 58mm SLII if you want f1.2 - very nice quality!!

The Voigtlander 180 f4 that was mentioned earlier is an amazing lens!! Nikon mount will be expensive but you may find it for less in another mount.

Based on what I own or have owned I'd recommend:

35 - Voigtlander Ultron SL 40mm f2 (EF mount available, or F mount with adapter)
- Nikkor 28/2 AI or AI-s, if you want wider
50, 55, 58 - I like my converted Rokkor 58/1.2 but there are mirror issues at infinity. I use LiveView on my 5DII so it doesn't bother me much. The Voigtlander 58/1.4 seems like a reasonable alternative, but I've not tried it.
100 - Nikkor 105/2.5 incredible lens for the price.
180,200 - I don't know. The Voigtlander 180/4 is nice but they are priced way more than $500 these days

mint Summicron 50's should be about $300.
nice Summicron 90's (pre-APO) should be ~$500.
mint Elmarit 135's are ~$200 and quite nice (yes, it's longer than 100).

what's wrong with the Canon 100/2? I thought it was quite nice. Have heard only good things about the Nikon 105 though.

Personally I think the Summicron-R 50 is stellar, even though it isn't f1.2... my favorite lens of all time. (It is just the right balance of everything IMO).

The Leicas are lookin sexy ..I think I can afford 500ish per, but the 35mm R is kinda pricey, no?

What about a Voigtlanger 35mm 1.4? Can that fit onto a 5d2 with adapter? If so, is it any good?

The 35mm Summicron-R can often be had for 500 or less. M mount lenses cannot fit onto an SLR, so the Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 Nokton cannot be made to fit.

I notice on ebay there are 2 kinds of Summicron R 35s, one that appear bulkier in size with a bigger filter size and costs more than a grand, and the other, older, narrower and $500ish range.. they both good?

Maybe i'll just go full Leica ...35, 50, 90 & 135 muuahahah

The way to tell the Leica 35 f/2's apart is by the lens hood. By reputation the newer one with the built in lens hood is better than the older one with a detachable hood. Earlier today there was a newer one on the B & S board for $500, but it was described as having some scratches on the front element. Otherwise it looked in pretty good condition. That should give you some idea of prices. For 500 a newer 35 cron will likely have some flaws. I would say it is about $600 or $650 for one in excellent condition. The 50 and 135 can come in easily under $500 and the 90 can be had for around $500. I hope this helps.

Ok.. looking around there are diff kinds of 35mm and 50mm summicrons. Ones that are more expensive than others. Obviously the 35mm E55 looks diff than the non-E55. But, what about the 50mm? The E55 looks the same as the non-E55, and is also priced differently. Is there a big diff between the 2 50's optically or physically

I think I made my decision and will go all 4 leicas.. just for simplicity & consistent colors to each when making movies and what not.

Like the 35s, the best way to tell the 50 crons apart is by the lens hoods. There are two optical version of the R mount 50 crons. The older version has a detachable hood and the newer version has a built in hood. I hope this helps.

Ditto on the newer 35 summicron-R pricing. Mine was 550 usd one year ago, no flaws whatsoever. my 50 summicron-R was 300 mint. Both from a camera store ... National Camera sales.

That 35 is really a special lens.
