p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Jupiter 50mm f1.5 m39

Hello, I heard about people that are using this on an M rangefinder saying that it's basically a Zeiss zm 50mm sonnar (same optics?).
It's really cheap compared to the zeiss zm version so I'm quite interested.

Is it rangefinder coupled?

(What "is" rangefinder coupling anyway?)

Could I use it on my M8 with a simple m39 to M mount adapter?

Thank you.

My copy is pretty soft and gentle wide open on film

yes it can be used on M8 with adapter and yes it is RF coupled

Coupling is basically the back of a lens being made so that it pushes a lever connected to the rangefinder system as you focus in/out

edit: search flickr for "jupiter-3" and you should get some examples

As far as I understand it is a copy of the older 1950's/1940's (whenever it was) Zeiss 50mm Sonnar, NOT the new one. Not having used it or an original 1950's Zeiss Sonnar, I can't tell you for sure, but it is a copy. So there is no guarantee that it lives up to the standard of the original, whatever that may be.

If you want a modern Sonnar lens, go for the ZM. If you want a vintage looking lens, go for an original Zeiss, or a Canon/Nikkor 50/1.4 or 50/1.5. The Canon and Nikkors are Sonnar formulations as well. I have a Nikkor 50/1.4 and it's amazing for a 50-60 year old lens. If you want cheap, grab a Jupiter

I know some people are very happy with the Jupiter. Can't beat the price. If you have access to a couple you might want to try them all out and pick the best one.
