When you do a T&I job for a league, do you offer fundraiser items for every child at the park, or just the ones that purchase something from you?

I don't shoot T&I, but I'd be surprised if items were given to parents that don't purchase anything. If that were the case, what incentive would it be to purchase, just wait for the freebees.

We give an 8x10 team and a coach & son 8x10 to the head coach. If its in our contract, we will supply an 8x10 team to the corporate sponsor.

I guess I should have been more clear. My bad.

The 8x10 team pictures, sponsor plaques, and coach pictures are not fundraisers to any of the leagues I shoot. They are incentives. They are freebies. They are there to sweeten the deal and have become commonplace in this business.

I was talking about buttons and/or magnets. Companies around here provide either a button (or buttons) or magnet to the league free of charge for each kid. The league then sells them to the parents to help make money. That's what I meant by fundraiser.

Sorry James......my bad.

We do supply fund raiser material to the High School Booster Groups, but not the leagues. Actually, we have never been asked by a league.

James, what areas are you actively trying get T+I jobs? I'd be more than happy to share what I offer...as long as you aren't trying for the same jobs as me

James... what has been more typical is a set amount of buttons, magnets, etc made available for sale through the concession stand with the responsibility for sales lying with the concession stand supervisor.

Paul - How does that work? Do you print them ahead of time or have the concession stand take orders, then you print and deliver them?

The point of this thread was something that came up last weekend at a T&I shoot. I had more than a few parents say to us that they had no intention of buying anything, but that they would just purchase the fundraiser buttons from the league later. My normal operation is to only photograph kids that have placed an order.

Do I reply, "I'm sorry, but unless you are purchasing something for your child, his photograph will not be taken, and as such, will not have buttons available to purchase from the league."?

This caused some internal discussions between my wife and I as to how it should be handled. I thought I'd bring up the topic here to see what everyone else does.

James...I haven't offered anything like that plus I haven't seen it in my area as long as I've been around Little League and youth sports.. Just the typical freebies to the league and coach. I've had the same thing where kids just show up for the team shot and parents aren't buying...then leave after the team shot.

Kinda OT - Those of you who do not offer this type of fundraiser (buttons/magnets), do you offer a percentage back to the league on T&I?

James...if they don't bring it up...I don't. If they do, I offer 10% back.

James,

We always try to take an individual of every kid (order or no order). We don't want to hurt anyone's feelings (peer pressure) and in some cases we do get an order later. This also takes care of the button issue should it come up, you'll have an image. Some parents do not want their kid's picture to be taken and of course we respect that.

Most order software will over look any image that does not have an order associated with it, so there is no extra work other than posing him / her, and shoot.

OK - I understand why the fundraiser button idea isn't part of your business model, then. You do percentage back instead. I don't offer money back on T&I. Ever. Only on action work. For T&I, parks get buttons or magnets instead of a percentage back. When I did the math, it made more sense for me and them to handle it this way.

300 kids @ $32 average sale = $9,600
10% to the league = $960

300 buttons sold @ $5 each = $1,500
300 kids @ $1.25 (per button) = $375

Under the 10% method, you give away $960. The park makes $960.

Under the button method, you spend $375. The park makes $1,500.

How do you identify kids that don't have order forms?

James..never used it because never heard of it till now. PM me some info on how it works. Also....numbers not quite that large. Little Leagues numbers around here are dwindling down. Lucky if the largest I shoot is 150-175. Also $32 average order a bit high....maybe like $20-$25. The percentage is also 10% of my profit....not the total take and I'm only doing that with one league
currently.

James,

Not questioning your model in the least, I'm just curious - do they really achieve 100% sales on the buttons? I definitely see the math from your side, but the league has to sell at least 192 buttons (64% of the kids) to break even with the 10% "fee" (from your example). In my experience as a parent when my kids were in youth sports, we bought the buttons the first year..and never again, as did virtually every other parent I knew.

I think you've taken a very sensible approach to the issue.

Frank, how do you pay 10% of profit without opening your books?
