I really want to know how it compares to the Canon 100-400. Has anyone found any comparisons?

It would be interesting to see, no doubt, but a 10X lens vs. a 4X lens is not a "fair fight".

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

That depends on the result
other than the zoom ratio and the difference in reach (how close to 500 the siggy is at normal working distances would be interesting) its a match up that needs to be seen
cost and use are very comprable

Other than the zoom ratio? But that's a key factor. I know that the 50-500 OS is a new design while the 100-400 IS is a bit older but if the performance difference is close then that is a major achievement to Sigma.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

The new lenses are posted/listed on the Sigma website now...I just saw them today. Some of the new lenses do not have a list price shown and the website simply says to check back in the spring. Looking forward to seeing the new 17-50 and 70-200. Hopefully these will be affordable alternatives to the Canon lenses.

All of the new Sigma lenses are free except the 50-500mm OS. They are listed as $0.00 on the Sigma website...

I'm not interested in the price until I hear about their performance. Even if the 70-200mm OS is $1,000, but has trashy image and build quality, then forget it.

Obviously the performance of the lenses is part of the consideration when or if making the purchase. Hopefully the lenses perform well. The comments at the beginning of this thread and at the lensrental website about the new 50-500 appear to be favorable...we will just have to wait and see.

Happy shooting,

I agree. But it would be an interesting shoot out nonetheless.

I have had the 50-500 now for about a weeks time and I love it.

Here's one shot at 1/60s, hand held at around 300mm (no flash)

Another at a full 500mm

Or wide open (6,3) at 420mm

And a 1/20s hand held.. somewhere above 200mm (no flash)

Last one, wide open and very sharp.

Good lens, but it can't rival the 100-400. I think it was unrealistic to think it can.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

I think the old 50-500 was more like 465mm at infinity from tests I've seen. I doubt they would have addressed that. It's pretty fradulent what they get away with on zoom lenses. 10mm yes, 35mm no.

I had seen the press release on the website, but as you said, there is no listing in the "normal" places...which makes no sense. If I owned a company and my company just announced 5 new products, I would want them listed on the website. There is obviously interest in the lenses and if a potential buyer wants to find information, they have to go digging around the internet to find a link to a blog...not good business! Those new lenses should be featured on Sigma's site with all sorts of samples.

Not bad for a 10X lens. If I'd be the kind of person lusting for hyperzooms I'd be tempted.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Mine should be here by monday in Nikon mount. Should make for one fantastic hiking lens with the 50mm start (weight is what makes it from being the perfect lens)
