This was one of my first tries shooting wide open at night on the street. It's scary taking pictures of people, but, I really wanted to capture the people and the interactions on the streets of San Francisco. Please check out the link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kinetic/4413740096/

Nice photos. I really like your toning.
thank you =) I just desaturate to about 70% for all my photos that aren't b&w. I like the hint of color, but without the distraction. I wish I could spend more time learning processing techniques. Processing is such an art in itself.
These are amazing shots! Please share your secrets; what camera and lens? ISO? Did you use flash? Etc. I'd love to know because I'm trying to improve my night shooting and your pics are really awesome to me.

Hah, the guy just asked the same question right before your post. D700 + 85mm f/1.4
ISO was set on automatic, never dipping below 1/100th of a second. I let ISO fly to Hi.2, with the FX format I'm not afraid of noise at all. I don't use flash, and there is some ambient lighting. I try to use lighting from street lights and store fronts that are coming from behind me. It helps a lot. I always shoot at f/1.6 with the 85mm at night. 1.4 isn't easy to focus with nor forgiving in terms of missed focus. 1.6 is sharp, still gives me fast shutter speeds, and looks decent. I'll shoot at 1.8 sometimes too at night.
Without dropping to 1.6 or 1.8 and without awesome high ISO capabilities, it's really hard. I couldn't do this with my other combo of a D80 + 50mm f/1.8
Okay. I am in a new town and you have motivated me.
These are just great and in spite of what you say your PP is great too. Maybe less is more and you dont need more time in post?
awesome! what new town are you in? photography is the best excuse to go and explore! I learn a lot about the place I live just by photographing the area and the people.
I can't find very many situations where the d700+85 does me wrong =) forces me to think about my composition rather than immediately snapping to some zoom length I always go for.
Also awesome in low light, sharp as heck even at f/1.6:
