Bob, i love the warmth coming from your lights. Are you at full or ½ power ?

Newburg? Are you in NY State?

Bob: They look great. I am a fan of bounced lights. The colors are excellent. Don't you just wish that high school gyms didn't have so much junk in them?

Ben.. I hate HS backgrounds...empty stands, puke colors, and all kinds of brackets, backboards, and gagets all over the place...but I also believe that if you can get decent shots in these caves you can handle just about any situation that might come up.
Thanks for your comments,
Bob

Sure, Bob, you're most welcome.I have not been to Newburgh NY since I was a kid & living in NYC.

how reliable are your Alien Bees? Fast recycling times? I am using a Photogenic PL1500 and a very old Photogenic PL06 600 ws units I bounce. They're heavy but work fine.

I'm kicking around the idea of the Bees after seeing yours and others work with strobes here.

Using the AB800's at full power recycle time is 1 sec. I use single shot mode and just time the shots according to the action going on. I use the bees with the cybercync system by Paul C Buff and I've had not one mis fire or failure in any way

Very nice work Bob. Nice to see the bright colors that strobes bring out without seeing any harsh shadows.

Bob - great shots again. I think a lot of people need to pay attention to how you're using your strobes. You're getting fantastic results without flash burn / harsh shadows I've seen from a lot of people. And, to boot, doing it with "only" a D300 and "inferior" sigma lens. Great quality work and good example of what's possible.

Boy, those strobes really sharpen things up! Great series. Also like the DOF. What fs are you shooting? or is the DOF due to the strobes? Rick

Bob,

I know you probably don't shoot hockey, but I'm thinking of popping for some AB's. How many are you using and where are they placed in the gym. I have only boys, and we only play hockey (Minnesota) and I would like to light 1/2 of a small arena with easy ceiling to bounce off. Any suggestions? Do you think two would do fine?

Nice look images. Lighting looks really even to me. What do the 11" reflectors do that the 7" don't?

they add almost 2 stops of "power" to the lights...so almost doubles the distance it'll throw....so if it's 75 feet from the light, up to the ceiling, and back down to the floor, with a 7" reflector that'll give you about f/2.2 with a AB800 at full power.....with an 11" reflector it gives you about f/4.2 at the floor....same light, same output...just more light hitting the floor.....and it also controls how much light spills into the stands, so if you want the background to have more light falloff, then you want an 11" reflector...

Thanks John...Although "some" people think these are "inferior" tools of the trade I'm very happy with the set-up and I haven't seen to many images with "top of the line" cameras and "over priced" lenses that are much better. IMHO

Rick.. These were @ F3.2 ISO 640 and a SS of 1/320... I don't think the DOF is affected by the strobes.

Gary... If the ceiling is good for bouncing I would think two AB800's w/ the long throw reflectors would do nicely for lighting one end of the rink. Shooting through the glass might be your only concern.

Paul... THANK YOU! I think I'm starting to get there

rhurley... I guess Nathan is the on-board Paul C Buff spokesperson

Interesting... lots of ambient for 1/320 not to mention sync speed. I think you have absolutely perfect positioning for your strobes. Do you have a setup shot?

I put the bees about 12' off the (4) corners inline with the sidelines on 10' stands. I shoot one end and my partner shoots the other end. I aim the bees bounced off the ceiling to the top of the key. With the 11" reflectors this seems to give me pretty even light for my end of the court with very little (if any) light spill onto the players causing shadows. I will have to take a shot of the set-up tomorrow night .

Very nice colors and warmth of the shots. Does not have the flashed look that we are all trying to achieve. Also, some nice isolation shots.

Hey Bob....you are tempting me to take a trip to Newburgh to do some benchmarking. These are, what Paul said....gotta be the best yet. They have a real warm and rich look. That purple stands out...
