Well, it is colourful and shiny but it's a bit boring. I mean, it is simple but without any added “something”. Nothing happens. It doesn't tell a story.

The first time I tried to use it was with this picture, it didn't work for me. Its to bad because it would allow people to see how suggestions were incorporated into the picture.

I saw the original. Closer crops almost always work better (to isolate the subject) unless there's a specific reason to incorporate negative space into a composition (which can also be very effective if used properly).
One of the many challenges I find with product photography have nothing to do with lighting the subject itself, but the background. With the exception of flatly lit catalogue photography, I always try to incorporate some sort of gradiated background with the subject, either in the form of a spot light, or complimentary color gradiation to either add a mood or some drama.
