I've been planning to show you some results of experimenting I did last summer....when I used three Canon macro lenses to capture BIF shots of whatever was flying within severely reduced FL. I was hoping to gain from inherent macro lens sharpness, learn a bit more about the role of slow lens AF drive in the overal AF process, and also have some diversion and fun. The macro lenses I used were 180L, 100 f/2.8 and 60 f/2.8. Some of those shots I already shared on the Macro Forums and they "loved" them.
Pijuns, Mallards, geese and seagulls were generally used as test targets with a few notable (lucky) exceptions. Pijuns were particularly useful as test targets because they were accessible to short telephotos, they could fly fast and could be quite colourful.
Here are three shots obtained with EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro + 1DMkIIN, natural light, minimum pp.
Dang, I like these Peter. Not so sure additional sharpness will be seen but surely a very nice stretch of tonal ranges can be seen. These are pleasing to the eyes, wing positions are unique and nicely display the back area and expose the neck coloring well.
#3 is gorgeous with just a hint of bright tail whites but lively looking! Great eye contact on all of these Peter.

Thank you, Karl....yes, the last one needed some more pp.

Fabulous shots! Some of the whites are a bit hot and detail is lost, but very nice still.
Thank you, Jody, yes some whites are too hot. Some day I might have to start shooting RAW and learn how to do proper pp.
Here is also a point blank one from the same series.

Did I just read this right Peter?? RAW?!? Great set with #3 stealing the fave spot for me! Terrific wing positions!
Thanx Conrad.....I wrote that in response to Jody just as my blood sugar level peaked so I must have been half comatose. Now that I've taken my insulin, I feel much better, I can reason again. Me shootin' RAW ? Conrad, that's as likely as gettin an ice cream in hell.

1 and 2 are quite beautiful and hats off for technical merit! Kinda like takin a knife to a gunfight and you pulled it off Looking forward to your future experiments

Thank you, Tom.
However, my hat off to you for I have never seen anyone baiting a Peregrine with a huge flock of shorebirds like you did in a recently posted and memorable shot.
