p.6 #1 · Canon 550D/Rebel T2i Announced

Ian - There's perfect room in the ~1050 area for a 60D in the UK. As discussed in the other threads, there will always be people who want the ergonomics and AF without the high FPS of the 7D. Here in the US, the price of the 550D is $800 for body and the 7D is $1700 for the body on Amazon.com, so there is a very large gap and definite room. It is weird to see the prices in UK though.

It would have to be more expenseive than the 550D but far enough away from the 7D to make anyone consider it

That's the problem, 550D is already close to 7D in terms of features. Same metering system, ISO6400, same megapixel.

How much was the 50D body when it was announced? $1400? Wasn't 7D body announced at $1700? If I'm correct, that's only $300 difference for a much better AF and faster burst speed.

I also want a camera that can shoot 24 frames per minute and can dance a jig for $1,200. Doesn't mean I am going to get it. The 60D is the 7D for now.

I'd say no...

the XSi is a great camera. The T2i's 18mp may not give the same IQ as you already suspect, so unless you need video, I'd stay with what you have...

Thanks James, I reckon this is the case too. My XTi was a toy compared with the XSi sensor. However, I loved the new LCD and the +-5 stop adjustment, and ISO6400/12800 too... I'll wait and see if high ISO performance on this one justifies the upgrade.

Let me please observe that here on FM, few photographers mention their gear, and instead present their results, their images. The image counts, and the skill of the photographer in capturing it, and afterward editing it.

I own both the XSi and T1i, and see little if any difference in IQ. Stick with your XSi, unless you may identify a sound reason for spending hundreds of dollars for the latest

Thanks for your answer, anotherview.
I never bought or really used any PP tool, maybe this is the bottleneck in my case... maybe it's time to buy Lightroom and play with it. If I want more ISO, will just push it some stops... oh well.
As I have a 2 month son, I guess I'll buy a cheap HD camcorder and use it for other purposes. I agree with you, photographs are photographs. But let me ask a thing: one can use a tool for more than one thing and that's okay. Otherwise smartphones or media centers shouldn't be part of your 'ideal world'?

Heck, even my vintage OM-1 can shoot 24 frames per minute

Do you really want to be driving a car that has no breaks and a stuck accelerator?

What features do people usually want/need from the x0D cameras? I'm just asking because since the Rebels changed initial from Xxx to Txx, their features have been upgraded significantly.

But not the ergonomics. For me this is a key feature.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

If I have to pay more for a lens with IS eventhough I don't really need the IS, I'm sure you don't mind paying a few hundred more dollars for the ergonomics of the 7D, right?

What was that? you don't need some of the features in 7D? Well, just turn it off. That's the usual argument around here right?

Exactly. Each product, be it a camera, a lens, a car or on oven have a set of features built in it. In essence, it's a package of features. You choose the package that suites you best because of the features you want and just put up/ignore the rest.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Return it and ask for store credit, pay a bit more for the 550D if you want.

Alunded, I'd imagine owning it for some time is rather different to just bought it this very day.

Yeah so just for the record: I returned it the day after I got it and am now waiting till (hopefully) March for the 550D to come out here in Germany. I really hope it will be March and not April, because some places on the Canon homepage say March, some say April. Anyways, the 3.5mm audio jack, manual video controls and 60fps@720p made it for me. 18mpx and 63af is a nice addition, which i'll certainly enjoy.

It's a bummer the old battery grips or even batteries won't fit no more

It's not 63AF btw. It's a metering system.

Have some respect, I'm pretty sure the sales for these consumer DSLRs helps Canon carry their flagship, high end DSLRs.

I think that's absurd, and I only use my cameras professionally. The rebels represent the best value in Canon's line for amateurs and professionals alike. The picture quality out of a 450D or 500D is fantastic.

This new rebel is even better than the 500D. There are a number of new features that belong in more serious EOS cameras:
- +/- 5 stops of EC
- the ability to set the ceiling for auto-iso
- 7D-style metering
- histogram over full-monitor preview image
- separate HTP settings for video and stills
- AF during video shooting
- a stereo microphone jack
- full 1080p at 25 and 30 fps
- 50 and 60 fps video for doing slow motion

The already excellent rebel just quietly goes on getting better and better. About the only limitations of the camera that amount to anything are the viewfinder and the 3.7 fps, but for a lot of serious photographers those aren't dealbreakers, especially when you consider the price. I would be quite happy to use only this camera for work, if I had to.

I think the 550D is great news, and the 500D will probably get even cheaper now.

They've upped the frame rate a bit, but couldn't they have actually made it 4fps rather than 3.7fps?

Yeah, that 8% speed difference is a dealbreaker. At 4fps it is the sport shooter's wet dream, whereas at 3.7 it's just another amateur landscape camera ;-)

Here's an update to my Canon camera trend graph showing the 1d4 and the new T2i as real cameras now

Last time I posted it I had noted that the 1.6 crop line seemed to accelerate in 2007, and this still seems to hold for the 7D and the T2i. Although I've not extended it, it would appear that the next crop camera bodies will be a little over 20MP.

I had thought the 1d series might track with the 1.6 crop bodies but as you can see it's lower. My guess here is that this body is driven by marketing requirements, ie the need for clean high ISO and high frame rate, so it doesn't fall on any of the other "technology" lines.

I still think that the next 1ds will be at or near 30MP. Not only because of the 5D and 1.6x slopes, but because Canon have to respond aggressively to Nikon and Sony. The next 5D follows the 1ds4 a year later at the same pixel count.

I don't think any of this is new to most people here, but I think the graph is intersting to check out once in a while.
