But then you wouldn't have to spend significantly more for another camera...IOW its bad business for Canon
Precisely. They need to delineate their cameras and they do it with different feature sets. Want the 1080p at 24 fps (or w/e all the T1i owners wanted)? Get a 7D or (now) a T2i.

One question for the 7D people out there...how big of a difference can be seen between 63 and 35 spot metering system?
I notice quite a difference, the biggest being that my pictures actually look like the subject looks. The new system seems to balance the light throughout the scene much better with less need for exposure compensation, even in the snowy conditions here in the midwestern US, and the colors look more accurate. While the added megapixels on my 7D are a nice bonus, for me the biggest improvements are the metering system and the awesome AF system. As for the new Rebel 550D, it looks like an outstanding camera and might make a nice lightweight companion for my 7D.

Hmm...thanks Racoll. Most of what I've read has been more concerned about the new AF system, so it's good to hear a real world testimonial.
alexandre: With 12.1 megapixels, the XSi can produce outstanding images. Some reviewers see this camera body as a classic. I venture to say most shooters need no more than this camera offers.
Let me please observe that here on FM, few photographers mention their gear, and instead present their results, their images. The image counts, and the skill of the photographer in capturing it, and afterward editing it.
I own both the XSi and T1i, and see little if any difference in IQ. Stick with your XSi, unless you may identify a sound reason for spending hundreds of dollars for the latest Rebel.
Please remind yourself that the XSi mounts all 5 dozen Canon lenses. Its images will edit in ACR, CS4, Lightroom, Elements, etc.
Yes, the T1i has a video capability, but I say so what? I take still photographs. If I wanted a video camera, then I'd buy one, and face the learning curve for it.
Was looking for a backup camera to my 5D2 that would double as a great travel camera that also does video. The 7D would have been ideal but out of my budget and a bit heavy. Almost bought the GF1. But with this announcement, I'm going to seriously consider the T2i so I don't have to buy/deal with more lenses and accessories. The GF1 is still way way more portable, however.
I'm very pleasantly surprised it has more video options that the 7D. I'm tempted to pre-order this pending some positive hands-on reviews.

I take it that the 550D does not have MA?
It wasn't mentioned in the dpreview but if it did, that would definitely put me over the fence about selling my T1i in favor of the T2i. I really want MA in my next body.

Holy s**t. RIP XXD line I guess? Those specs are a lot better than I expected out of the T2i. Now I've got a dilemma as to what to do with my all my CF storage. I was hoping for a 50D/60D - as I can't justify the 7D - decisions, decisions.

Most likely, 550D will lack m/sRAW support.
I like the idea of used-defined max ISO value (in Auto-ISO mode).
Eye-Fi integration is interesting. This equals cheap WFT.
I like the user-defined max-ISO as well. Perhaps this can be added to the 7D via a firmware update, like they added video features to the 5DII through a firmware update.

That 550D leaves little room for a 60D crop camera to sit between it and the 7D, methinks...
Yeah I expect there not to be another xxD - Just not the space but it's a nice price point bump for Canon :-/. So Monday I order a 7D and now it's outdated :-) Will have to take some pics with my outdated camera when the brown truck gets here

Agreed. I don't need the AF of the 7D and I'm not willing to spend $1500 for it. However, an XXD body with some of the features of the 7D would be a nice replacement for my 40D.
But many people want the AF of the 7D. I don't think Canon is going to come out with a camera similar to the 7D, but with an antiquated AF system. Not a good selling point to the masses. Companies are streamlining their product lineups now. Doesn't look good for a 60D, but then again the 7D is probably the eventual replacement to the 50D.
What features do people usually want/need from the x0D cameras? I'm just asking because since the Rebels changed initial from Xxx to Txx, their features have been upgraded significantly.
Before 7D, the only choice for action photography or birding was the x0D unless you can afford a 1D body. That's a much bigger gap than from a Rebel to 7D.
If I need the FPS and AF, I'd rather spend the extra money on 7D than the x0D body anyday, otherwise the newer Rebel Txx seem to be more than sufficient. As for people with big hands... well, bad luck I guess. Gonna have to get the batt grip.

Some buyers just cant justify the expense of a 7D although it has come down to a more realistic price now its still £1300 ish here in the UK (uk price for the 550 is £799)
The 550D has made a step up in Res but a step back in RAW buffer (the 450D was 6 Raw 500D was 9 Raw 550D 6 Raw) I had a 450D and while it was a great cam I just kept hitting the buffer with it (even my old 350D seemed better)
That said I just cant see space for a 60D unless the 550D comes down in price a fair bit when its been out for 6months. 60D cant possibly have less mp or lesser video options than the 550D. It also would have to have a better FPS than the 550D but less than the 7D (so around the 6.3 of the 50D) , It will have at least the 50D AF. It would have to be more expenseive than the 550D but far enough away from the 7D to make anyone consider it
