Edit: I was just going through my telephoto gear bag and guess what I found? The Kenko TC that I thought was on the lens when I first posted this thread a few days ago. Oops! I've changed the title and edited this original posting text to be correct. I'm still impressed.

I hate to burst your bubble but if the lens were the Leica 280mm f/4 APO, with or without TC, we'd ALL be reading Ocean News.

Toss up an example, this is the ALT thread. We do have the time to sit around and chat about nice gear...

The Mamiya might be sharper below f/4, than the Leica ;-)

I mean no disrespect by this, but why initial-to-middle obfuscation about a Kowa spotting scope and what seems like a test shooting through the back of it with a point 'n' shoot, for the majority of that thread? The references keep calling it a "lens attachment" as if to heighten the suspense...about using a high-end digital P&S to photograph through a birding scope?

FWIW, I would certainly have fun with that rig you used, for plane spotting :-)

Yeah, they both look like fun optics. I'm not sure what you mean by "initial-to-middle obfuscation" though. If you're asking why I didn't name the scope right up front then the answer is because I was really only interested in people's opinion of the IQ comparisons. But, yeah, suspense is fun too!

I posted a link to the Kowa thread because I noticed the Mamiya was the same price. But I guess according to RustyBug I'm not allowed to comment or something. He pulled this in another thread too. <shrug>

Douglas, I'd prefer to go a bit faster. The Summicron 180 would be a nice partner for my other three 'Crons. I wouldn't be surprised if it's as good as the Mamiya.

Bifur, the 300 APO cost me about $1500 US in 2008. That's less than the box for my 1DsIII, or John's EF 50/1.0L.

My 280mm f/4 APO cost me US$1600 in 2004.

Great pix. I originally set out to get the Leica 280/4 APO but instead got a 180/2 APO at a good price. Added a Leica 70-180/2.8 APO. Kept thinking about that 280 even though the 180 takes TCs so well. Now I have the Mamiya 300/2.8 APO (cost me $1850. including the S&H and Fotodiox adapter.) So, even though there is a 280 on eBay right now, I think I have it covered. Also have the Mamiya 120 macro on the way.

Those are indeed impressive. In asking for images, I should have known you were prepped and ready I've never tried using any alt glass for wildlife. Proof it can be done, and done well.

Wait, I lie: I did shoot a perched hawk with a Mamiya Sekor C 500mm f/5.6 and 2x Mamiya teleconverter on a 40D. I shan't do THAT again. It was a mess.

The 500 looks like it was designed in the 70's and the performance is certainly not like modern APO or ED-labelled glass. But it was cheeeeap for 500mm. So there! My 500 Mamiya 5.6 can out-crap your Leica...take THAT!

So, not all Mamiya 645 lenses are great?

I sold my Mamiya M645 C 500/5.6 last year. It just didn't live up to expectations.
