Hello,
I'd like to ask for help. I have the option to get a Canon FD 24mm 1:1.4 S.S.C. Aspherical. However, there is a problem and I would like to know if it can easily be fixed.

The seller describes the problem as follows:
There is play in the focus ring of 2 to 3 millimeters. This is particularly the case if you turn the ring quickly. Slowly, it works most of the time.
Getting things in focus, however, was not a problem so far.

I would like to convert it to EOS and I am willing to open it and fix it but I have no clue if this could be wear (bad) or loose screws (good).

Any ideas? I wanted the lens for a long time...

Hey Max,

I have the 55 & 85 Asphericals - I can't imagine a 2-3mm "play" in the focus ring. I wonder if it's being confused with the aperture ring??

I've tried to win a bid for one of those lenses too many times and can't seem to find one for a reasonable price. I missed an FD 24 L a few weeks ago that sold for around $350.00 usd.

I can't help other than to say I had that problem with an 85L I bought from KEH. At first everything was fine but as time progressed a little play started first a 1mm then 2, it got worse until the day after the warranty expired it gave out completely and I ended up with a 15mm play. KEH did repair it for me for free.

This may or not be related to the above issue, but the focus ring is attached to the helical body in a different way than a smaller lens. The screws could be loose. This was the case on a FD85L, once apon a time.

Is this the 24/1.4?

Screws, yeah could be. The 1st thing I thought of was that the dampening grease was dried up or gone.

Hi max,

I don't have a FD24mm f1.4 (couldn't find one at reasonable price, and missed some at great prices which usually ended at mid-night). But one a Taiwan site it was told that the focus ring could go loose, and it only takes some courage and a screwdriver to fix the screws under the rubber focus ring

Jim, it is the same lens like the one you pictured (before conversion).
Perhaps the picture above shows what you mean with your hint about the way how the focus ring is attached to the helocoid?
If this way the "L" version is attached applies also for the "SSC aspherical" version, I surely could fix it!
Maybe you could tell? Thank you!

Mark: I have the FD 85/1.2 SSC and the FD 50/1.2 L
The 24 is missing to have a nice trinity!
I think the 85 SSC does not have these fixation screws.
The 50mm L lens perhaps, I don't know.

With respect to the 24/1.2 SSC it is apparent from the front (the removable ring, telling you what lens it is) that there may be more between the rubber ring and the glass elements. I was hoping for exactly such three (or so) screws.

350 USD is a bargain! I've seen them going for 700 EUR. Buy-it-now prices of 1000 EUR exist! Which really is surprising, considering that the EF 24/1.4 mk1 starts around 850 EUR.

Well the link I posted is a FD24L, so it is not sure if your SSC aspherical would be the same. My 85L does use exactly the same method to fix the focus ring.

Well if your SSC aspherical does not use this kind of contruction, then the only other cause of a loose focus ring (that I could think of) would be likely due to deterioated brushing. Please see Pengland's posting in this FD24/2 thread. Someone is selling these brushings on the Bay 1 2. I don't see any specified for the 24/1.4 aspherical, but looking at the offerings from the seller, these brushings seem to have only serveral standard sizes (across different lens). As long as it fits yours....

Oh no! I forgot how the SSC's focus ring is fixed! Please go to Taiwan's Bigeye to see an example of 55/1.2 SSC. You will have to use a rubber tool to remove the plastic front name ring, then a len removal clamp to remove a copper ring. After that, the front barrel (with filter thread) simply comes off to expose the three screws that holds the focus ring in place. You just need to tighen them and add some glue to fix them in place.

Play in the focus ring of my Asahi Pentax 50mm 1.7 K-mount led me to do some microadjustment. (http://aperturemode.blogspot.com/2009/11/autofocus-microadjustment-on-canon-50d.html) This slack would make the Canon autofocus beep happen at the incorrect position, depending on whether I rotated it clockwise or counterclockwise. Looking back, it never occurred to me to simply figure out how to tighten it, thanks for this thread!

I think it depends on the magnitude of slack.

If it is 2-3mm, something is wrong. E.g.the screws need to be tightened.

If it is a slight difference in approaching the focus from infinity versus from MFD side, I think it could also be some little inherent play of the helix system which is harder or impossible to fix.

Thanx also for your site! It'll make me testing some of my lenses for this clockwise / counterclockwise thing.

Play is as described, feels like that easy thing which is probably possible to fix from the front.
I will start repair and conversion next weekend (30/31st Jan).

With a shaved mirror like that, you can have infinity with the 85 SSC.
With the 24 SSC infinity should work on full frame camera without mirror modification (that's what I read).

My 24 Asp has arrived , and of course it has a loose focus ring . And the back edge of the front element is looking strange, being oddly reflective . After removing the name ring, it was showed to have missed one screw.

This is a short write-up for the conversion process:

1. Detach the breech lock mount from the lens, use reference such as this (Chinese).
2. Detach the light baffle from the breech lock mount.
3. Put the light baffle on the back of the lens, and carefully align the screw holes (there are too many holes to get lost). Mark on the baffle which screwholes will be used and also which side is upright.

4. Use the light baffle on the front face of the M42 adapter as a template (pay attention to which way should be upright). Drill holes and countersink accordingly.
