First time trying backlighting...was interesting. For some reason I am into fairies right now...

Editing to change picture to a different crop/color.

Nice shot, Princess. I like the color even though it may be a result of your white balance being off. However, I could stand to see a different cropping - not quite so centered and also without cutting off the bottom of the stand. It certainly is the sort of object that lends itself well to backlighting.

All the best,

Endre

Thanks Endre for the comments and helpful advice. The color was intentional...I was bored with white, so I used different gels and this is the one I liked best. The flowers on the bottom of the stand cast odd looking (to me) shadows, so I cropped them out. I might play with the crop to see if I can get a better one. I suppose I should have started with something simpler to learn backlighting, as this particular object presented many challenges for me with reflections and shadows.

Light Princess,

As far as starting simpler, quite the contrary. Many of your previouly posted images have been very pleasing (and might I add, vote-worthy). When we set the bar high for ourselves to begin with, we are often times rewarded with good outcomes... Nice entry for the WA.

Best Regards,
Kurt

Thank you, Kurt for your kind words and encouragement. This certainly has been a learning experience...just much more challenging than I anticipated. I have spent WAY too much time over the last couple of days trying to figure out how to photograph this little guy in a way that I am happy with.

A vast improvement, Princess! In this reshoot, the color appears to be an actual yellow as opposed to the earlier one where it might have been poor white balance. It's a subtle but noticeable difference. I also far prefer this cropping and centering. True, the little shadows on the table are bit peculiar looking but they certainly don't bother me. If you have the ability to clone them out in PS, that would work but you'd really need to be skilled with it to not make a mess due to the subtle gradient of the shadow. You could even try to have much tighter shot of just the little fairy inside the glass and have the bottom be framed by the green leaves. Anyway, I like it a lot better now. Good work.

All the best,

Endre

Endre,
No photoshop skills here, so I think the shadows will have to stay for now. The fairy is only about an inch tall and doesn't look so good much closer, so I think I'll stick with this crop.
Thanks again for your input and help with this photo.

Too much yellow for me. Sorry.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
