I am looking at a used Canon 17-55 2.8 IS but when I think of the cost maybe I would be better off going with a Tamron 17-50. Is the Canon worth the extra cost? I have owned both in the past but never had them long enough to form an opinion between the two. Back then it was between the 17-55 or a 24-70 which is my favorite but the money is not there.

I am also very interested in that new Tamron with VC might take a gamble on that one and save a couple hundred over a used 17-55

By what I've read the original non-VC was better, I have no hands on experience though. I do have h/o with the 17-55 2.8 IS...WOW....That's it...WOW...

I tried two different copies of the tamrons and wasn't impressed with either. I am really enjoying the 17-55. I rarely take it off my camera. Much sharper and more consistant focus is the main reasons.
Maybe just my copies though?

Another echo of haven't used the Tamron, but loved the 17-55 f2.8 IS. It was the hardest thing to give up when I moved away from crops.

If I was going to pay the cost of the Tamron VC I think I woud rather spring the extra for the Canon 2nd hand.
UK prices of course but
Tamron VC is £530
Non VC is £330
The canon new is £800 but I would think shop around 2nd hand a £650 would be a close bet, maybe a little cheaper.

Just looking and saw the price of the Nikon version . is it really as good as the £1000+ price tag would say? and it doesn't even have VR!!
The Canon looks a bargain
