I set my 7D to it and it shoots at something like 2 fps. I figure there is a CF that causes this but I did RTFM and was unable to find it. Av, MF, Silent mode 1, fast card... What am I missing?

Any idea what it is? TIA.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Highlight tone priority might be slowing it down. So might 14-bit data. So will focus priority vs shooting priority, if it offers that option.

Lens cap off? Low light? I mean, if you are just testing, this could easily be the cause even if you set shutterspeeds high and manual focus to obtain high speed. The 7D needs light for high speed! (unlike some other EOSes that do high speed anyway if you just set it to do high speed machine gun shooting).

Anyway, have EOSfun with the new toy. And I hope a new job for the wife in 2010! All best.

There was a thread concerning this. As post eos states, it needs light to keep the high fps. Low lights keep it slow, even in manual focus. Very weird.

Also if you have high ISO NR set to high, your FPS will go down significantly.

And, there are two high speed modes. 8fps and 3fps. I assume you have it set to 8fps?

silent mode1?
other than that try it in good light, as others have said it seems to slow right down if its dark (ie lens cap on)

Put it on Manual mode and hear it racking up the frames.

It was indeed that. I feel so silly I could just bury myself. You see, AV is 99% of my shooting and I thus plea for temporary insanity. OMDG! after shooting for 20 years the notion that I can do such a basic mistake is simply mindboggling. I don't know why I bother advising other people when I can't even advise myself.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

You'd think that if you paid nearly 2k for a camera it'd be able to blast off eight 1/2 second exposures per second anyway.

Don't sweat it. I thought you had the lens cap on because the 7D needs light to shoot at 8fps, even if you are set to manual exposure. I can't remember exactly, but if your light level is lower than about ISO3200, f/2.8, 1/100 sec (i.e. you would be underexposed at these settings), you can't get better than 4 fps.

Here is a line in the 7D manual, page 93:

"In low-light areas or indoors, the continuous shooting speed may become slower even if a fast shutter speed is set."

The silent modes only work in live view. there is no Silent mode in regular shooting.

Never mind the mistake, this can happen to anyone. Glad you have the highspeed EOSfun Enjoy the 7D, and keep dreaming of the 17mm/4.0. We all keep our fingers crossed for better times for you and your wife long before the 20k posts figure is hit

You know. You are absolutely right. I'll call Canon and complain.

You're an angel. I was positive that I RTFM back and forth but I still missed that.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Sure, and to immortalize my mistake? No thanks. I'd rather put it behind me ASAP. That is, once I manage to forget it.....

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

There is. In fact, both mode 1 and mode 2 can be used for normal shooting (p. 137 in the manual). I wrote it in the OP as there is a warning for mode 2 and continues shooting.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Thank you so much for your kind words. As it took me 5 years to get to 10K I sure hope she'll find a job long before 2014. Otherwise I'll be in big trouble and will probably be trying to see if there's such a thing as P&Sfun.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
