I'd second the previous suggestions to look at a fast prime.
The 24-105 for 28-70 is certainly a good deal, for the one who's going to get the 24-105...
Don't get me wrong, I'd feel bad about giving up my 24-70, but I'd rather keep the 24-105 with my fast primes. The 24-105 is a good GP lens, with nice reach and IS to boot. It may be slow at f/4, but it is relatively sharp at that aperture. Combining it with a fast prime gives you the best of two worlds.
The f/2.8 zoom alone will "limit" you in comparison, whatever the IQ.

PS look at your work and see what focal length you use most and where the zoom's speed is limiting you, that might be the best point to start looking for a prime.
