p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Trade a 24-105L for a 28-70L or ...?

I currently own a 5D MK.II with the kit 24-105L lens. This is currently the only lens I own, having looked through my photos I find I have no particular bias towards any single focal length, although I have used the lens frequently at either extremes.

I don't tend to shoot fast moving subjects but have done so occasionally. I've considered trading my lens for a faster 2.8 zoom and my current budget won’t stretch for a pre-owned 24-70L, but for not much more I can stretch to the older 28-70L.

I realise I'll lose out on the wide, but I feel this would be a fair trade off for the extra stop and better subject isolation when taking portraits.

So my question is would the combination of 70mm @ f2.8 lead to more pleasing subject isolation than 105mm @ f4?

In the context of a school gym lighting would you say it would be preferable to have IS or an extra stop or light (for shooting award ceremonies).

Finally If I take into account the required money to exchange my 24-105L to a 24-70L I find my options increase quite considerably. I've toyed with the idea of the following combinations which all seem to fall into the same pricing category:

1) 24-105L + 50 f1.8 MK.II + 85 f.18
2) 24-70L or third party alternative i.e. Tamron or Sigma
3) 24-105L + 50 f1.4 (either Canon or Sigma)

What are your thoughts on the above combinations on a 5D MK.II?

I would say get a 28-70/24-70 then a 85/1.8 ..... then again I am a noob ...
There are good alt lenses out there IE: Tamron 28-75 (around 300) or Sigma 24-70 (this one is a bit softer than both 24-70L and 28-75).

OT: selling my 24-70L and Tamron 28-75...but don't know what is going on @ B&S ..got PM telling me that recently there was a 24-70L sold for $675 and that I shall lower mine (which is priced @ $1050...also stated :" price already lowered to the lowest..). Sorry if this is bothering anyone ...just need a place to vent.

You won't gain a lot of EOSfun if you change the 24-105/4.0L IS for 28-70/2.8L. If subject isolation and portraits is part of your photographic style, save some money for a fast prime. An 85/1.8 probably fit's best to your needs. But if you want to do half body shots one of the 50mm maybe a great addition to your setup too. You mentioned the 1.8 and 1.4 50mm's from Canon and Sigma, but don't forget the 50/2.5 macro. That is a very nice lens too and will give you the capability of shooting macro as well. Of course the faster lenses with higher openings give shallower depth which is better for subject isolation. But given the fact that you have a one-only lens solution now, I could imagine discovering the world of macro would open up a lot of new creative possibilities.

Finally, keep in mind that a 5DmkII is not a single lens tool. Trading the 24-105 for a 28-70 would keep you in the single lens mode. But there is a reason why your SLR does have a mount to change lenses. You'll discover the great world of DSLR shooting once you add some extra optical instruments to your current setup.

Have EOSfun

I actually traded my 28-70 2.8 for the 24-105 4 IS...the latter being a much more versatile lens in my opinion. Keep it then get fast prime.

eosfun: A very insightful post, you've answered my question throughly!

photomarvin: did you find the range or the IS more versatile?

I've never found my current lens to be "limiting" for my photography. However recently I've moed to Japan to work in a school.

At the school I've had the opportunity to shoot some events for the school newsletters and such on an amateur basis.

Due to this I've found myself using my camera more frequently indoors under low lighting, hence my desire for a faster lens.

Also by portraits I typically mean of groups of children so having a wider focal range is preferable, which is where I think a 50mm will be a more suitable focal length. The newsletters don't require large images so I find I can crop individuals out of group shots and they're able to use these just fine.

What does the 24-105 lack for the group shots? I guess it has all the focal ranges within the zoom. Is it only speed? I know the schools in Japan are not in the dark . So use the available light and bump up the ISO. The 5DmkII is good enough for high ISO shooting. IS will help you to keep the camera stable. Now it's just up to you to keep the kids quiet

Say cheese チーズ and have EOSfun

Did the same thing with no regrets.....

Just look at a fast prime to go along with it!

I wish I had the option to rent a lens and to test the combinations out.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I'd second the previous suggestions to look at a fast prime.

The 24-105 for 28-70 is certainly a good deal, for the one who's going to get the 24-105...

Don't get me wrong, I'd feel bad about giving up my 24-70, but I'd rather keep the 24-105 with my fast primes. The 24-105 is a good GP lens, with nice reach and IS to boot. It may be slow at f/4, but it is relatively sharp at that aperture. Combining it with a fast prime gives you the best of two worlds.

The f/2.8 zoom alone will "limit" you in comparison, whatever the IQ.

Ruy
PS look at your work and see what focal length you use most and where the zoom's speed is limiting you, that might be the best point to start looking for a prime.

I went the other way. Yes the 2.8 was nice but I find the 24-105 a much better alround lens on my 40D.
I would keep the lens and if possible add some primes or a tamron 28-75

why don't you keep 24-105mm and buy 85 1.8. Will be useful for inside fast action pics as the AF is FAST!

Another vote for keeping the 24-105. A fast 50 or 85 will make much more difference (than an f/2.8 zoom) in situations where you need the wide aperture. From the standpoint of subject separation from background, keep in mind that magnification makes as much difference as f/stop. Make use of the 105 mm focal length to get tightly framed portraits with good perspective, and you'll find that even at f/4 the backgrounds tend to blur very nicely.

I have 24-70 and 24-105mm both. If I have to part, it'd be 24-105 as I simply love 24-70. However, in your situation, I'd just keep 24-105mm and go for 85 f1.8 as some people say AF is FATEST and will help you in inside fast action!

Another vote for keeping the 24-105L. The 85 f/1.8 is a great addition and will be a good auxillary lens when you need the low light capabilities. I use my 24-105L and get very good subjuet isolation at F/4.0. Your distance to subject and and zoom are very effective at creating a pleasing bokeh effect with the 24-105L. The 85 f/1.8 is just all around fun to work with also. If you can pick up the 50mm range also, the f/1.8 Mk I or the f/1.4 are both great lenses. The 50 f/1.8 Mk II is a solid performer, but I'm not keen on the build quality. Good luck with your decision.

For me both the range and IS made more sense. I have a 35 1.4 and 85 1.8 so if I need a faster shutter speed I'm covered. But most of the time I'm using a lens in that range I'm using it for general event stuff with a flash. So, I'm almost always shooting 4.5-6.3 anyway. The extra reach is really handy and the IS allows for some creative shutter dragging as well. It made sense for my situation.

Having said that...My copy of the 28-70 2.8 was amazing...super super sharp! But my 24-105 is no slouch in that dept. either!
