I discovered my middle daughter, Katalin, and her friend, Lana, pushing this rather large apple onto a plate today and thought it would make a good shot for the WA topic.

I decided to reshoot the apple/plate/table shot to get it sharper - to match the sharpness of the girls. I couldn't get the exact same setup so it necessitated a slightly different positioning of the little (very little ) girls. I think it is an improvement.

I haven't entered in awhile. Too much to do and somewhat boring topics.

I hope all of you had wonderful holidays and I wish each of you a most wonderful 2010!!

Endre

Endre:

The last time I complimented you on your photoshopping ability, you assured me no PS was involved. I'm going out on a limb again here and again would like to compliment you on your PS manipulation. Great idea!

My only nit might be that the shallow DOF on the plate doesn't seem to quite match the crispness of the rest of the image.

All the best,
Rich

Thank you, Rich! This time you can compliment my PS skill if you so desire. I had to think this through very carefully before I started it and, as with any such project, I find that I ought to do a dry run before making a finished version. The plate, the apple, and the table were all shot at once. I realize in retrospect that I ought to have increased my DOF a bit to get more of the front edge of the plate. My fault. I'm the one who always says I hate out of focus foregrounds and then I go and mess it up. I may re-shoot that again if I have time. The girls I had to shoot outside in front of a neighbor's garage - Katalin standing on a step stool and Lana beneath - both holding a big exercise ball to simulate the large apple. I must say I was quite surprised by how nicely they ultimately seemed to fit into the finished shot once I got them properly extracted.

I'm very glad you like it!

I send my very best wishes for a wonderful New Year to you and your family!

Endre

This is the funniest pic I've seen in a while but I must confess that the posture of the girls is not perfect. It looks as if they are not putting any effort into it, which would be required if they were indeed holding such a large apple.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Thanks, Yakim, my friend. I'm delighted that you like it. As to the posture of the girls: at the moment it was shot, neither had to be pushing that much. As you can plainly see, the apple is resting on the lip of the plate. Katalin is just stabilizing it and Lana has just pushed it up there and since gravity is distributing the weight onto the plate rather than onto her, she also looks more relaxed. I hope that helps explain it.

Have a most wonderful 2010, my friend!

Funny shot Endre,

I must second Rich's compliments on the PS. Initially I did not catch the girls' reflections, but sure enough, with another look there they are. Very impressive work.

Best Regards and Happy New Year,
Kurt

Thank you so much, Kurt. It is very nice to hear form you and I'm so glad you like the shot. As it happens, while you were posting this, I was busy making a new version incorporating all the little details that I missed in the first version. I had to reposition Katalin inside the plate and that also necessitated a few more reflections of her feet against the ceramic of the plate. Overall, it is much sharper now since I reshot the plate/apple/table combination at f 22 as i should have in the first place.

Have a wonderful 2010!

Endre

Nice concept Endre. The lighting on the girls doesn't work for me with the main image. It just doesn't look right. Also the reflection of the girl to the left looks compressed and should be stretched to be a bit more realistic.

Nice work with PS... this would probably get my vote, but in this forum I prefer photographs over photoshopped images.

Thanks for the comment, Klaus. Each to their own, I guess. The direction of the light was pretty much the same for both shots. As to the size of the reflection of both girls I had to match them to the perspective of the same angle of the apple. If you notice, that is flattened, too, and Lana's hand on the apple is in (as near as I could get it) to being in the same place in the reflection. I would rather not have had to change the reflected perspective either, but it would have looked a lot weirder if I hadn't.

All best wishes for a wonderful 2010!

Endre
