Problem with setting the aperture in manual mode.
Instructions are the same as my 40D, but it doesn't seem to work.

The dial on the back face is working fine for everything else except manual focus aperture.
The top dial works for the shutter speed.
I have it on the top on/off position.

I tried resetting all the user settings. That didn't work.

Anyone else having this problem?

Manual focus aperture?

To turn on back dial it has to go in the 3rd position, beyond ON.

Also check that you don't have the back dial set to change AF points (the way I like it).

I should have wrote, "manual mode, aperture control"

I put it in the top position, beyond ON.
It should work just like my 40D, which I have no problems with, but it still doesn't work.

I just tried setting C.FN III: Autofocus/Drive to 2: Quick Control Dial like you use it.
That doesn't seem to work either.

It must be a faulty dial, I'll probably need to send it in to be fixed. 1st day out of the box and I'm already having problems.

Thanks for the help.

Well does the dial work for any of its other functions like moving between images during playback?

It doesn't work for aperture changes in M mode.
It doesn't work for exposure compensation in Av, Tv, P modes.
So far it works for everything else including all menu functions & playback.

With power switch in far up position:

I can set Aperture with Quick Control Dial in Manual mode.

I cannot set Exposure Comp with Quick Control Dial in P, AV or TV modes.

Camera went to Canon Service for the switch-far-up/Quick Control Dial Exposure Comp setting issue as well as bad focusing and what I took to be electronic noise (second trip). Given that EC could be set by other means (Quick Control Dial with shutter button) I wouldn't have bothered with that alone except to make sure that that particular malfunction wasn't the harbinger of a bigger problem. At any rate, the camera came back with everything else seemingly normal except setting Exposure Comp. No specifics about repairs were divulged. The repair report said that they had been unable to determine why Setting Exposure Comp with QC dial didn't work, but they had replaced some of the electronics (same boilerplate about electronics as another FM poster reported. I've gotten boilerplate before about updating the firmware when it had already been updated). Camera seems OK now except for the one function.

Added Note: another FM member reported same problem back in August.

I would exchange it rather than send it in for repair

I think that the inability to set Aperture with Quick Control dial in Manual mode is a major problem. If camera is within return period, I'd follow Jerry's advice.
