p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Zeiss ZE, Contax hoods & caps.

I have a Contax/Zeiss 85/2.8 and would like to get a hood for it. I've been looking for a list of what hoods and caps go with what lenses, but haven't found anything yet. Can anyone tell me which Contax hood I should get for this lens, or failing that recommend some other hood that will suffice?

From what I can tell, the hood system for the Contax reflex cameras works like that of the Contax G cameras, where they have tubes and step-up rings, and you have to get the right combination for a particular lens. Is that right?

Most folks seem to like the snap-in style caps because they don't fall off. But I prefer the slip-on style, because the way I work is to carry the camera in my right hand with the cap on most of the time. When I want to shoot, my left hand removes the cap as my right hand lifts the camera to my eye. Then as I put the camera down, my left hand puts the cap back on. But this is much harder to do with a snap-in cap. The Contax G caps were very good for working this way.

Yes, my right hand doesn't know what my left hand is doing.

Also, I'm expecting my ZE 35/2 to arrive any day now, and presumably it doesn't come with a hood. Looking at the pictures of the Zeiss W/A hoods on B&H, they seem somewhat minimal, and I'm wondering if they offer any real benefit. Do the ZE hoods come with the appropriate cap as well?

Thanks,

Neil

The hood for the 85/2.8 looks like the #5.

That would be metal hood #5. I have used it, and it's a funnily looking combination.

Ah yes, that's the list I need.

Looks like there's also a soft hood (#G-11) with the 55mm thread that would work without a step-up ring, but the #5 metal one looks deeper and more useful.

The use of the #5 metal hood will also require the Contax 55/86 hood adapter ring. This threads onto the lens, and the hood then threads onto the adapter.

I just happen to have a 55/86 hood adapter ring up for sale in the B/S forum. Also have a #1 and #3 hood, but no #5 (sorry). If you're interested in the 55/86 adapter, drop me a PM. Here's the link to the adapter ring (Item #4 IIRC):

Hi, at least 2/35 ZF comes with hood like all other ZF lenses I have seen and ZE 21. I don't see no reason why 2/35 ZE would be the only Z* lens which comes without hood

OK, I guess I shouldn't assume. That's good news, thanks.

Hi, anybody knows which diameter lens cap to use with Metal Lens Hood No.1? I have a D28 and 55/86 ring. Recently got a hood#1. The 86mm lens cap no longer works on this giant hood (the original lens cap wont work with the ring and hood on. I am putting a right size lens cap in front of the hood).

Same problem with the N50 with GB-76 hood on. I am thinking a 82mm lens cap.

Thank you.

Yes, Neil, the 35ZE hood is minimal, certainly compared to the 35L I had before. But it seems to work OK. I have only felt its effect when shooting very close to having the sun right in the picture.
