I suppose I'm more like a nymphomaniac hooker, because I make my living with my gear...
And i'm in it just for the fun.
Oh and i forgot, just got an 16mm zuiko and a sigma 24-48 as well
I am an altoholic...

Great first step, Anders! Now we are all altoholics here. Nobody is going to judge you... only your pics...

Besides the lens advices, the best thing I've learned here is to appreciate bokeh, that sometimes is preferable to have a slower lens with good bokeh than to buy a lens just based on f number.

For me it's just the general excitement for what the gear can do. People here also tend to be (mostly) inclusive and civil. That helps keep me on my best internet behavior.

Edited to add: The best specific advice I've received was from Steve Spencer, letting me know about the Elpro 3, which was a great addition to my first-love alt lens, the 90 'cron.

Viogtlander 125mm APO. I never would have sent $1000+ to Singapore for a lens I had never seen or heard of without the encouragment and samples from here.

that I could get a Summicron-R 50 for less than the EF 50CM... it was on the Canon board actually...

To tell the truth, this forum - while occasionally providing a breath of fresh air - is still largely dominated by the pixel peeper / measurebator crowd. The only difference is that these people go on and on about yesterday's waybitchin lenses, and how well they work when mated to the waybitchin modern cameras they argue about in the C or N forum. "My Zuiko is just as sharp as your Nikkor!" Yawn. Anyone who NEEDS (and needs to talk about) fancy toys before they're even interested in playing 'photographer' should probably sell everything and go buy a box of pretty rocks to stare at.

I've only got 2 alts, but I'm always surfing fleabay, looking at possibilites for another lens, and of course, lurking about here, admiring the results you guys get from your alt. lenses.
I don't want to just be an awesome photographer... i want to be a CREATIVE photographer.

Greg says "pixel peeper" like it's a bad thing.

Perhaps Greg has noted some Fanboy-ism on this forum. Well, it exists on all gear forums.
But there are a lot of helpful posts too, that have helped me notice differences between the
"look" of images from various company's lenses. This has helped me look at images with
more discernment.

I do think the Nikon crowd and the "Alternative" crowd have pushed Canon to get its
wide angle act together too. That benefits us all.

I don't entirely disagree with Greg as far as the onerous infallibility of certain lenses here, and the *ENTIRE INABILITY* for Canon to make a lens, evidently. There's personally too much of a "alt at all cost" mentality there, even when a factory lens may be the best option for the situation.

Not to say that I'm a Canon fanboy (eye's with envy Nikon users' ability to use a lot of alt/old lenses with auto-aperture), but it would be nice for people to state more objectively that they just don't like oem lenses when someone asks for an recommendation

We do vacillate between high and low signal-to-noise ratio periods, but all in all this and the lighting section are the two best around.

Yeah, everybody should say nothing here. Wait, hence this forum wouldn't exist!

Greg has a great point, who would think that gear discussions would dominate a gear forum? HERESY I TELL YOU!

(and for the record, the admirable blur and alternative images threads are _way_ better than anything I have seen here or on other forums, so just get out of the forum and find yourself some pretty rocks, you won't be sorely missed).

Avoiding "auto everything equipment" - stay away from 18-300mm lenses and cameras with coffee cup holders, earphones and pop-up-flashes.

Skip Manfrotto mounting plates / clamps and go straight to AS...of course I didn't heed it, like everyone else, but it was still good advice...

actually, it depend on what you are shooting... a manfrotto head is perfectly fine for something up to the 100 USM macro or something...

True, no doubt they work fine but there's something deeply satisfying about the grabbing hold of a 1D series body in an RRS L-bracket firmly attached to a RRS or Wimberly screw clamp on an AS ballhead...

"Solid"
