What is the best advice you can think of that you got in the altrenative forum? I hope this thread may be a source of some really good ideas

For me, a few years back after buying my EPSON R-D1, the introduction to the Voigtlander line of lenses -soon followed by the purchase of the nokton 40 1.4!

It was not an advice, but more an addiction
In order of relevance for me:
- Paul 'Cogitech': Rokkor 58/1.2
- Ed Sawyer: Zuikos in general
- Richard 'Brainiac': Zuiko 40/2

There are dozens more but these helped me more in the beginning of my disease

+1

It is always extremely helpful (and sometimes entertaining) to see real world/actual photographers opinions on gear based on user experience. This is truly invaluable and the primary reason I keep returning to this forum.
For lenses, I think the Rokkor thread and other conversion threads for alternatives were extremely useful.

I think I was best served by visiting here and learning that there were so many lenses that could be adapted. I also learned that using MF is ultimately more satisfying in certain types of shooting, and I really enjoy that aspect.

paul's original rokkor conversion page was truly the start of my alternate thinking (although i've always used various old cameras).

It opened my eyes to the possibility of using lenses that can't be 'adapted' to work on canon by actually fabricating a new mount and also the fact the adjusting infinity was possible using the infinity stop

sort of a breaking of thought boundaries if you will - re-setting my mental limits on what can be achieved and what is OK to do (eg pulling a lens apart and servicing it myself etc).

Lens performance can be superior to Canon L!
To a fraction of the cost!!
Manual focus can be better than AF!!!

A grateful Thank You to You All for sharing!

Lots of little pieces of information.

1. The latest was the encouragement to use
an Ee-S screen on the 5D. My manual focus accuracy has gone up now.

2. Zeiss glass, in general.

3. Another recent "hot tip:" The Rokinon 85/1.4
Fine lens for portrait work. Great price. Thanks, all.

My intro into doing things differently. There were a bunch of helpful and knowledgeable people here but the one which IMHO stand above all is Jim (jcolwell).

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Conurus Contax N to EOS conversion
Cogitech's 58 mm Rokkor conversion
Hubsand's Nikon G adapter (though now that I have an adapter, I can't afford the 14-24 - my drain field failed over the Thanksgiving holiday and needs to be replaced)

To adapt non native lenses to my camera body.

I now have alt lenses with capabilities that I would never dreamed of owning otherwise.

Manual focus can be more accurate than autofocus, but it takes practice
Manual focus frees up composition
The Minolta Rokkor 58mm f/1.2 is a nice lens
The Olympus 28mm f/3.5 is a nice lens
The Olympus 24mm f/2.8 is a nice lens
The Leica 90mm f/2 (non-AA) is a nice lens
The Minolta Rokkor 35mm f/1.8 is a nice lens

There are so many good advice here, but tips on the Distagon 21, OM 28 f3.5, OM 40 f2, Rokkor 58 f1.2, OM 90 f2, and Canon 200 f1.8 stand out for me. When I started using a 5D in 2005 I had completely lost interest in what gear could do for my photography. It was the beginning of a continuing epiphany, and I thank everyone who has shared his knowledge with me.

Same here. Getting some manual focus lenses reignited my passion for my expensive hobby.

The BEST singular advice (amongst a ton of excellent advice) ...

... having the concept of 'drawing style' explained. This totally changed the way I look at glass ... and corresponingly, the way I think about imagery. I have my personal preferences, but:

1) I have expanded my own tastes
2) I have a much greater respect for others' workmanship that differs from mine.

Even when something doesn't catch MY eye, I at least try & think about where the shooter's mindset was. Sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't ... but I do respect it more that I ever would have before benefitting from all the excellent advice in this forum.

Thanks to ALL.
