Ebay Products

I'm looking for an Intervalometer that won't break the bank. I don't know what chinese brands are best or which ones people use most. Your thoughts would be most welcome. It needs to work with a 50d.

Thanks in advance.

This one is excellent and I can confirm that it works with both my 50D and 5DMKII.

You need to click on the 'click to see the complete description' bit to see the full camera compatibility list.

I saw that one... If you had it to do again would you get it or one that uses AAA batteries?

by the way, I just bought that one.

I'm getting two - one for a buddy for xmas and I plan on keeping the better one for myself.

Anyone use another one - hopefully one that uses AAA batteries?

I have the YongNou brand unit, which looks like the link posted. I think I paid $30 or so on eBay. It works great. I use it for star trail images.

I have to admit that I never really thought about it. Now that you mention it I suppose the AAA would be more readily available. Either way though the device functions perfectly and for the price the battery format is not a deal breaker.
Hope you enjoy your purchase.
Ronan.

I just got my hands on a Satechi brand TR-A timer release. It runs on 2 AAA's and fits the 20D, 40D, and 7D pretty well. Doesn't 'snap' into place like the Canon but once attached feels tight and sturdy. Not built as solid as the Canon but no real complaints so far.
Got mine through Amazon but it seems that it can also be ordered factory direct.

Hope this helps.

I bought these two

One uses AAA batteries, so I'm thinking it'll be the one I end up keeping, but the thing that is different (other than the price) from the one Shawn posted is the little wheel.

Thanks for posting Shawn, if these don't work out I might snag the one you posted.

Do these have a maximum number of frames that can be programmed?

The Satechi brand TR-A can be programmed from 1 to 399 shots. It can also be set to -- or infinity and in this case it will continue to fire the camera until the memory card is full, the camera battery dies, or the batteries in the remote die.
I'm not sure what the wheel does on the Canon or the ebay units but mine allows for:
Delay/Self Timer(Time until shooting starts)
Bulb/Long Exposure
Interval Timer(Time between shots)
Number of Shots
I also noticed the operating temperature suggestions today. -20 to +50 C. Sadly the temp just dropped to -30C (-42 with wind chill) in the last 24 hours. It looks like my Canadian time lapse project will have to wait a bit.

I have this one also and works fine with my 7D.

In terms of the battery (which is rated for something like a couple of thousand hours), what I do is put a piece of paper in the battery compartment when I'm not using it. Since this is easily opened with your fingernail, it takes just a second when you are in the field and want to fire it up.

One annoying thing is it only goes up to 99 frames - sure which they would have added an extra digit on to that. You can set to 00 and it will (presumably) fire forever.

I have one of the $30 ebay ones, along with one genuine. Can't tell a difference, neither seems the camera.

A limit of 99 frames is limiting. Has anyone confirmed that the 00 setting does go beyond 99?

So basically, the camera auto-powers down between frames, then wakes up each time with the shutter command from the remote?

How do you control exposure changes? For example during a sunrise?

With 00 it's unlimited, I have confirmed that when taking a time lapse movie with several thousand frames.

I just learned about these about a month ago and can't believe I didn't know about them before.
I was looking into buying a laptop solely for the purpose of doing timelapse photography when someone suggested this.

I wouldn't worry about the battery - My genuine one's been going years on the original battery ...

I have a Phottix that I got from eBay. Don't use it much, but when I do it works well.

It uses AAA batteries but the problem is there is no off switch. So when not in use I take a battery out. I wonder if any of these units have an on/off switch?
