p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Samyang 85/1.4 Evaluation Shots

Here are two shots that I took to test the Rokinon 85/1.4 that just arrived. They were both taken under typical conditions. The first set (this post) is a test of corner sharpness with lousy indoor kitchen light at ISO 100, using a tripod and mirror lockup. The second photo is a typical boring kid shot testing sharpness more toward the center, again indoors at night, this time at ISO 800 (the subject can't sit still, I'm afraid). All shots were on a 5DII. For each shot I present full frame straight from camera (white balance and exposure fixed in raw conversion), a 100% crop, and sharpened versions. Here's the first set. I used SmartSharpen in PS on the sharp crop: lens blur, 100%, I think .6 radius.

Evaluation: The lens is pretty darn sharp even in the corners f/1.4. My Zuiko 50/1.2 certainly couldn't do this. With a little sharpening in post, the result exceeded my modest expectations. The only real annoyance so far is the lateral chromatic aberration, which is clear in the printing on the menu.

Sorry, I'm whipped. Yes, of course, it's f/1.4, not f/1.2.

You got me excited there... I was ready to trade in my Rokinon f/1.4 already!

I was distracted by 35/1.2 that's said to be coming along.

For $220, I'm thinking this one's maybe a keeper, at least for a while.

Where did you find one for $220? Thanks.

There's no electronic connection of lens to camera. 50mm must show up by default.

Sounds right to me. Iam used to the Nikon system, where you put the non CPU info into the camera manually, and the focal length shows up in the EXIF data.

I wish Canon's had that ability.

I also like on my my D700 how I can scroll through my different MF lens settings by using the thumbwheel and Fn button. Really nice feature....

I received my Samyang f/1.4 85mm last week, in Canon mount, fitted to my 5D.
It lacks an AF-confirm chip, and focusing with my old eyes was not that easy. But surprisingly more than 90 % turned out in focus.

Here are some mixed images I have taken within the last days:

And here are a few portrait shots of my wife. Some "cosmetic" post processing applied, but the sharpness, the bokeh and the color rendition of the lens really shines.
I am quite happy with my new purchase. I ordered an AF-chip to make focusing more convenient.

All taken at f/1.4.
