I have seen many people use alternative lenses instead of Canon L lenses. I would like to ask what alternative lens you like the most on your 5D MK II or any FF camera. Photos will be great.
Thanks

Voigtlander 40/2 would be a good place to start...

You can just look around the different threads on the Alt. forum. Most people on here seem to be using full-frame cameras.

Using Zeiss ZE 21, ZE 50, ZE 85, as well as Contax 25, 135, 180. A good place for you to start would be this thread:alt lens with index
Jonas B has done the colossal work of indexing every shot, and there are 95 pages full, so that you can find lernses easily. Hope this helps.

I use two 5D MKII's with leitax converted lenses + Haoda Split focusing screens...

Here's my setup:

Leica Summicron 35/2
Leica Summicron 50/2
Leica Summicron 90/2

The most used lens, will be the Summicron 50/2, since i'm a normal lens
kind of guy...

I also have a Carl Zeiss Biotar 58/2 (a lovely lens) + M42 Hoada adapter
and a few MF Nikkor lenses, like the 45P + Haoda adapters...

I used to use all Zeiss lenses,(35/50/85) but i find the new ones to contrasty (ZE, ZF)
so i switched them all out with Leica R, which are in my eyes, of a much better formula,
and highly preferable if you shot mainly B&W, like me...

I hate Canon lenses, and never use them...

Zuiko 18/3.5, 35-70/3.6, 80/4 macro, 135/4.5 macro.
Rokkor 58/1.2
Voigtländer 105/4.5 APO Lanthar
Zenitar 16/2.8
Vivitar series 1 90/2.5 Macro
Rollei Zeiss 35/1.4
Rodenstock APO Gerogon 150 and 240

Most used at the moment are the 35/1.4 and 58/1.2 due to bad light in a grey Sweden. The macro lenses gets alot of attention in summer.

Zeiss 85mm f 1.4 Planar
Zeiss 21mm f 2.8 Distagon ( ZE )
Zeiss 35mm f 2 Distagon
Zeiss 100mm f2 Macro Planar ( ZE )
Zeiss/ Contax 60mm f2.8 S Makro Planar
Zeiss / Contax 28mm f2 Distagon
Leica 50mm f 2Summicron R E55
Canon EF 65mm 5:1 Macro ( maybe not "alternative, but what other lens does this ?? )
Voigtlander 180mm f4 APO Lanthar

The Zeiss 35 ZE sees a lot of action these days. But my favourite of the above is the 60mm S-makro planar...

I use that one too. Had the Zuiko 38/2.8 and 20/2 before. They are very good if you want alternative high mag lenses.

what about the Carl Zeiss Planar T* 35mm f/1.4 lens MM type? There is a local seller asking $870 for this lens. Should I get this lens or get the new ZE 35mm f/2 (same price)?

I need either a 35mm or 50mm and would like to try an alternative lenses to experience the 3D effect that people are talking about.

I use the Contax-Zeiss 35-70mm f/3.4 on my 5D Mk II. Works great for landscapes

Great shot! I used to have this lens and its great. Just found the 24-85 to be easier to use but 35-70 is hard to beat for IQ and price

My suggestion would be to try either a Contax 35 f:2.8, which is cheap and very good, or, if you prefer to try a ZE, a Planar 50. Again, fantastic value for money, except if you expect to shoot wide open at minimum focusing distance. The ZEs are easier to use because you don't need stop-down metering, adapters etc...
The new ZE 35 is so new that I haven't gotten mine yet, but pictures from trusted members here indicate that it would also be a fine choice. I can't see myself paying as much for a C/Y lens as for a new ZE, unless I really needed the extra stop. YMMV.
Hope this helps.

Philber,
There are some local sells in my area. There is a seller want to sell the whole group including :100mm 3.5 Sonnar, 28 mm 2.8 Distagon, 50 mm 1.4 Planar. Asking price is $800. What do you think?

You can't go wrong with an SMC Takumar 50 1.4

There are two decisions IMHO, trihai. First, do you want to go the C/Y route, with adapters (you can either buy cheap ones or more expensive, chipped ones, which give you AF confirm, EXIF, Av exposure control), with stop-down metering, and maybe filing down one lens or two (not as dramatic as it sounds, even for a goofy guy like me).
Then take a look at street prices for these lenses, with KEH or Adorama to check whether this is good value (I think it is, but being in Europe, I could be off).
Don't forget also that shooting MF is not as quick as shooting AF, and that stop-down metering is slower yet. So don't expect to get "grab-shots" out of these lenses, unless you have a special abilty like some guys here.
If the answer to the above is "yes", then I think this is a very good selection of lenses, both from a focal length and a IQ point of view.
Alternatively, the ZE route is easier, but much pricier. Just one ZE 28mm would cost pretty much the same as the threee lenses plus adaptors. It depends where your priorities lie.

Philber,
At this point, my answer is "no" because I rarely use MF. Most of my lens is Canon L so I get used to AF. However, I want to experience the alternative lens, and Zeiss lens really caught my attention.

From your reply, I assume that the set of lenses (100mm 3.5 Sonnar28 mm 2.8 Distagon, 50 mm 1.4 Planar) are the C/Y mount, and I will be able to get an AF confirmed adapter to mount them on a 5D MrII, correct? Could you point me to a site where I can find this adapter?

Many thanks,

Tri

If you could get it down to $600 for all three lenses go for it. All 3 lenses are very high quality. I never used the 100mm, but the other two I really enjoyed. I still have the 50f1.4
